Hi,
I’ve been using opensuse 11.2 and windows xp at parallel. After I decide to reinstall windows, I got the error saying “invalid partition table” after the first restart of windows xp installation.
I tried to use windows system recovery console and committing fixmbr and fixboot commands, but didn’t work.
After all, i boot with opensuse livecd to run the grub and got my opensuse back.
How can I installed windows on a opensuse installed system? My plan was first to install windows xp, then opensuse again.
That’s probably the right way to go (windows then Linux). This is a
problem because windows ALWAYS assumes it is the only OS on the box and
therefore ignores anything that it could break during its installation.
Linux’s install typically notices windows and sets up the boot loader to
boot either way. Welcome to the way of arrogant stinkers and friendly
people, respectively.
So with regard to fixing this, what do you have in your current
/boot/grub/menu.lst file? Making windows work again isn’t usually too bad
since its boot entry is very simple. Having the output of ‘fdisk’ showing
your partition structure could help as well. Assuming your main hard
drive is /dev/hda the following would be what to run and post the output from:
sudo /sbin/fdisk -l /dev/sda
And to get your menu.lst file:
sudo cat /boot/grub/menu.lst
Good luck.
