Somewhat new to Linux and OpenSuse, I have dabbled with it for awhile but this is my first experience with OpenSuse.
I have an IBM T61 with an Nvidia Quadro video card. Everything seems to work.
I am an Admin at a large corporation and just bored with Windows.
I could use any tips or tricks that you could suggest, also a good FPS for fragging or an MMORPG would be appreciated.
I have found the Packman Repo but was dissapointed to find that it is lacking behind Livna for Fedora 9 that I am experiementing with, trying to decide which one of these two distros that I like better. Both have interesting advantages and disadvantages. Makes it tough to pick which one is the better one.
Welcome to openSUSE and to our forum. There is an openSUSE Linux concepts page here: Concepts - openSUSE
… but I suspect you will find that a bit too basic.
Interesting … a number of the Linux engineers where I work are big Fedora fans. I can’t hold a candle to them technically (in terms of Linux knowledge they really rock and roll) and on occasion we chat about the latest rpms we get. In multimedia I typically get updates on Packman before they do on various Fedora repos … but I confess it has been many months since we last compared noted.
openSUSE also has the build service now, and that has made a world of difference in getting rpms.
Also, I highly recommend zypper for installing software. … its very fast in openSUSE-11.0: Zypper/Usage/11.0 - openSUSE
I never use the 1-click install myself, but instead I keep my repos trimmed to only 4 repos: OSS, Non-OSS, Update and Packman. If I want to install other software, I’ll add another repos on a temporary adhoc basis, install the software I want, and remove the other repos. This takes only seconds with zypper. … ie … in a konsole:zypper ar < repos url > arbitrary-name-for-repos
zypper install application-you-want-to-install
zypper rr arbitrary-name-for-reposwith a cut and paste the " < repos url > " this is done in seconds. [having a high bandwidth connection helps].
this will not only install better repos automatically, but also the much needed add-ons for SUSE functionality.
I dropped windows over a year ago, and am so happy that i no longer deal with virus’s and other problems and lockups. Yes you may need to trade up hardware ( my printer worked, but my scanner never was compatible, but i sold it on ebay, and found one on ebay combatible and didnt loose a penny in the exchange). Bought me a xbox360 for real games, and im now the happiest camper. I even got my 60 year old parents into SUSE-LINUX, and the games for linux are perfect for them, I havent had to fix a computer issue for them im over 6 months, unlike windows they called me every other week.
