INTERNET???

Hi, i have installed openSUSE 11.2 on a dell dimension 2400. My Ethernet card wasn’t working, so i am using a wireless interface, but it doesn’t work either. It worked on a dell dimension 4400, but when it gets to the activate network my system freezes. Should i re-install my system, or should i post this under the hardware category.

Thanks in advance

Thanks for your help:), again rotfl!

Have you tried configuring eth0 with yast?

yes, when it goes to activating network services, my system freezes up and i can’t do anything, i need to hold the power button to shut it down.

vader95: try to update NetworkManager unless you have already done so.

how should i update this, i have no internet connection, that is what i’m trying to configure on YAST, but it freezes up. I’m not even using Network Manager, i’m on traditional, and when i try to change that, i freeze up again.

I see, soory I’m out of ideas what to try next without internet access. Otherwise I would try ndiswrapper and the Windows driver next. That worked for me on an Eee Box 202 PC.

Sorry to bug in. Im acctuly sa neewbie here.
but…

Isent it posible to geet latest update for yast on a memory stick. and put that in the usb and update from there? just thinking here…

As far as I know you have the kernel driver. b44. shows in the output.

So it should configure

Updates can be downloaded on to a separate media, but you should grab them all, because there are bug fixes related to internet connections.

where should i get these updates at?

Oh, and the windows driver is an .exe, so how should i try that?

Ignore the windows driver. You have a driver, it’s called b44

Time to go to your friendly terminal emulator (e.g. find xterm or anything ending in “term” in your applications. Are you using Gnome or KDE?)

switch user to root

su

followed by your root password

discover your current IP settings

ifconfig

or

ip addr

post any results here.
I think if you wait long enough Yast will eventually tell you what it’s waiting for when it’s trying to configure the network. I suspect it’s trying to access an online repository but can’t because the network isn’t working. When you tried to configure the network what did you actually set it to? DHCP or a static IP address?
I find NetworkManager easier to use than “traditional method with ifup” in Yast (in gnome at least). Don’t forget to untick “Enable IPv6”

i’m on KDE, but it completely freezes up at

 activating network services

even if i don’t configure anything.

DHCP by the way, i’ll need to check the settings for the ifconfig, i am not on suse right now, so as soon as i do, i’ll post them.

Thanks

here is the output, i put 0 in for ip, gateway, and for my mac adress.

I however know these and can do what is needed with them.

Thanks

I’m trying a re-install now, the repair system said that my file system was corupt, and it wouldn’t fix it.

Thank you to everyone who helped, after a re-install my openSUSE is working great. I appriciate all of your opinions.

Thank You

This is good news. Enjoy openSUSE
