Internet stopped working without using aVPN

I had installed Safings portmaster, and everything was working great. but den I decided I wanted to use my VPN. and that did not work with portmaster so I uninstalled it and stopped the systemctl services of portmaster.

i installed it via the shell script pr their instructions, and Uninstalled it from here

Now I only have internet connection when I use my vpn (windscribe) I cant figure out why. I do not want to use portmaster anymore, because I have started to use OPNSense as a router. all my other computer work on the same wired connection if I plug them in. so it must be something that’s been broken by portmaster firewall.

Any and all help would be greatly appropriated!!!

This is often caused by your vpn client failing to reset your DNS settings.

Verify if it is a connectivity issue or a DNS issue would be my recommendation for a first step to take here.

Check your software for a KILLSWITCH (it may have another name). A killswitch is a security feature to prevent a network connection that is not secured by the VPN.

I checked to see if it was the VPN, but it’s not, i’ve uninstalled that too. but as soon as I reinstall Safing-Portmaster(firewall application) I get internet connection again. what is OpenSuse OEM network manager? I find a iptables file which I cant read (binary file) but do not have iptables installed on my system. I have not installed anything else network wise on this computer.

when i try YAST network settings it says ( Network is currently handled by NetworkManager
or completely disabled. YaST is unable to configure some options.)

when I run systemctl status NetworkManager it’s acive and running.

btw. why using a crappy external firewall application like this, when openSUSE (and all other linux distributions) contain their own well integrated firewall application…

I liked the GUI of it and it’s easier to see what goes where rather than on the cli.

I see my solution to the problem I answered FredInAriz and dalto has not made it to the forum yet.

I had forgotten that I had installed controld dns server once I disabled that uninstalled portmaster and the enabled it again everything worked as it should.
