Most of these speedtest websites are worthless. They measure little more than the impact of internet congestion. The only meaningful test, if you want to find out what speed your setup is capable of, is to download a largish file from your ISP’s server, or at least a local server (to eliminate the many “hops” involved in accessing a “speed test” at the other end of the world).
You’ll never achieve that speed in real-life surfing or downloading, of course, but at least you can check that your network is properly set up and that your ISP delivers what it promised.

These kind of tests are just for giving an idea about your connection
bandwidth, no more, no less :-). The good part is that you can measure you
line against several hosts located anywhere (Japan, USA, Europe…).

Yeah, but a direct peer also has its own “glitches”: I can perform a test by
downloading via ftp an iso file (~690 Mib) located in a server with very
good connectivity and near my place, on Saturday night (when no one is on
the net :-P) and I will get a very good result. Sure.
But sadly that is no “real life”, is not an average measure.
Tests like “Speednet” provide a more reasonable (near to real) test speed
result.

Just tried Speednet. It’s better than most, at least it uses a local (to me) server so it comes fairly close to my actual speed. Most others don’t. The only speed that matters (because it is all you can control and tweak) is that between your computer and your ISP.
