Internet navigation problems

Hello

I’m new in the linux world and the inconvenience I have is this: the search engine very quickly finds the requested sites, but many pages cannot be loaded, not even this home page or the repositories. This is very frustrating.

I’ve faced this problem with many other distros as well, but fortunately could solve it in LinuxMint by using OpenDNS. (LinuxMint now works fine; the Mandriva distro, which I also have installed never presented any inconvenients at this respect)

I’ve tried OpenDNS and other free DNS servers in OpenSUSE, but to no avail. I’ve tried disabling ipv6 (in the card and in firefox), but it didn’t work either.
I think I must be doing something wrong, but don’t know what.

Could anybody help me solve this in OpenSUSE? Any ideas?
I must say that I like OpenSUSE and don’t want to give it up.

Thanks in advance

P.S.: Intel Dual Core, 1.8 GHz, 160 Gb SATA HHDD, 1 Gb RAM, Ethernetcard, ADSL connection, PPPoE, no router, dynamic IP.

I can’t really see that openDNS should make any difference and some people are not so comfortable using it either.

Are we to assume you have some kind of usb modem?

You seem to be able to connect to the internet but can only do a search - do you mean via Google?

It really doesn’t make sense that you can connect and do one thing but not the other. Try copy and paste of this for example:
Index of /repositories

What error do you see?

Uwe

Hello

Thanks for the prompt reply.

About the modem: it is not a usb one, it is connected to the phone line.

I use Google to navigate and it finds the relevant pages o.k… When I try to connect to openSUSE.org, for example, I select the page, press enter, and Google displays “Transferring data from openSUSE.org …”, at the bottom on the left, and that’s it, it stays there forever without accessing the page. When I type “ubuntu” in Firefox, several addresses are quickly shown, the first one being the Ubuntu home page, I press enter, Google displays “http://www.ubuntu.com/”, at the bottom on the left again, and can’t go further (as in the previous example, something like a little wheel appears on the top right side of the page and keeps revolving clockwise, meaning that Firefox is trying to access the page).
It is a pity I don’t know how to insert the images of this here (I pressed the “print page” key and files with snapshots were created).

Never has any error message appeared.

As I can’t navigate properly, Opensuse can’t be updated and no programs can be downloaded since Package Manager can’t access the repositories. As stated before, I faced this same problem in several other distros, but was very happy to be able to solve it in LinuxMint (I have Opensuse, LinuxMint, Mandriva and W. XP on the hard drive).
I hope to solve this inconvenience in Opensuse also as I like it very much.

I’ve just opened Firefox and typed “index of /repositories” as suggested. Very fast this was shown:

Hello

I’m beginnig to lose hope about Opensuse …

Beautiful system, but not being able to access most places really makes me down …

why are you always using Google?
What when you paste
http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/
into the URL field of your browser?

Uwe

Hello

I opened Firefox and typed:

htt://download.opensuse.org/repositories/

immediately this page was found, I pressed enter and Firefox displayed “Loading” … one minute passed, two, three, four …
nothing could be loaded. I began another search and typed:
openSUSE.org. The same thing happened once again. Nothing loaded even after waiting for some minutes.

  • behto5,.

Yast, Network Devices,Global Options: Uncheck “Enable IPv6” and reboot.
Does this change anything?

Uwe

Hello

I’ve already tried that, but it doesn’t work either. It makes no difference.

Thanks for answering.

  • behto5,

you mention you tried different DNS servers. Is it possible that you have a misconfigured DNS running on your local machine and it messes up things? Please open up a console and issue a

dig www.opensuse.org

Post the output here.
