Internet dying and computer freezing on unplug of any usb

I am currently using opensuse to run a server, however I am experiencing some difficulties. Every once in a while, and I mean completely randomly. This will occur out of no where, and then not happen for five days, then occur twenty times in a row. What happens is the computer runs fine, and all is well but suddenly it wont connect to the internet. All applications are fine and everything is working. It isn’t frozen, just won’t load webpages. I am using a belkin 111v2 wireless g adapter and it usually works fine. So when the internet freezes, if I unplug any usb the computer freezes. The mouse stops moving and the keyboard won’t respond. The caps lock light won’t even turn on. However the laser on the mouse is on, but the computer won’t respond. Its like its shutting off the usb hubs. The only thing to do is force shut it off and restart until i no longer have the problem. Sometimes it helps if I open it and re-seat the ram, but that gets old. Does anyone have a solution?

So, have you considered that the computer might be over heating? How old is the computer? How dirty inside is this computer? Are all of the fans working properly? Whats the ambient temperature around this computer? Normally, I don’t recommend unplugging USB devices when the network stops working. In general what you describe does sound like a hardware problem, perhaps over heating, perhaps memory related. But I really don’t know what might manifest its self in the manner you describe.

Thank You,

I actually had the thought that it was overheating as the fan used to increase in volume when it froze up. However the fan hasn’t done that recently and it is not in a particularly warm area. The first step I took in troubleshooting was blowing out the inside to see if that would help cool it down and it didn’t help for long… :frowning: Thank you for the quick response. What should I try to fix this issue?

I apologize. Please don’t skewer me alive! Anyway, it is a dell gx280 so it is relatively old. 3 years? 4 years? Something like that. The inside is clean because I cleaned it as a troubleshooting option. I imagine the fans are working properly as I can hear them. There are two, the PCU and the CPU fan. There is no case fan because its a rather small pc. The ambient temperature is room temperature. The only thing that freezes is the internet. All applications work. And an update, it turns out it only completely freezes if I unplug the wireless adapter, mouse, or keyboard. No other usb devices that I know of create this issue. Thank you for your help, and sorry if I didn’t answer all your questions.

If I was in your position, older PC, don’t intend on buying a new one, seem to have some hardware issues, but not sure what here is what I would try:

  1. Turn on the PC with the cover off and make sure ALL fans are running.
  2. Buy a small 12V DC case fan (80 cm?) and install it.
  3. Buy a new Linux compatible wireless adapter.
  4. Consider a new USB Mouse and Keyboard combo, perhaps wireless.

Linux Compatible USB Wireless Network Adapter- Google Search

Above is a link for Linux Compatible USB Wireless adapters to look through. All of the above items can be used on a new computer if need be and would not be wasted if the old PC can not be fixed.

Thank You,
