Hi everyone (sorry for the wall of text, you can skip to the last paragraph to get to the actual question)
I recently migrated my Desktop from Win Vista to OpenSUSE 11.3 (64bits) and it worked just fine up to a recent time. Since last Sunday this system is unable to connect to any web page or to the updates server. Please note I also had a laptop with same OS and one with Win Vista working at the same time
The laptop with OpenSUSE presented the same issue and was the first one but later, when testing by separate, both laptops were able to connect and work fine, and only the desktop remains having trouble
Last thing, when trying to connect from the Win laptop I was receiving a warning from the DSL modem itself telling me that, due the Internet use I was having, there was a good chance to have a virus
Win Laptop is running on a corporate image with all the fat security tools (McAfee suit), and it is still working today. At that time only “notable” application was Outlook
OpenSUSE Laptop is also working fine today despite not having ClamAv updated properly. At that time I was watching some videos on Youtube
Finally, OpenSUSE Desktop was working in KdenLive to edit a video and no Internet application was in use. The system had all the automatic updates up the Sunday, before it stopped working and affecting all Internet connections
How can I make sure if there is a malicious software and how can I clean it if no connection to update ClamAv can be done?

clamAV can only see Windows virus…because there are no known Linux
viruses…
the problem you have been having since sunday on the desktop has nothing
to do with what the router reported about the windows machine maybe
being infected, or any malicious software on your linux machine…
well, i presuppose you take normal security precautions on the Linux
boxes (strong passwords, and do NOT log into KDE as root, etc)
so, what else happened on that desktop on sunday?
crash will editing video maybe?
or, an update?
or, you made some changes to the networking set up, or
or what? (make sure it is still plugged in to the router, for example)

Thanks for the responses. Basically yes, the Desktop crashed a couple of times when editing the video and, as the Internet was not being used in that machine, it took some time until I really noticed. Also, please note this affected ALL the machines connected at that time. This means that, while the Desktop computer was on no machine could connect to the Internet. Finally the video edition ended, the machine was restarted but, up to this moment, if I start the Desktop computer all the Internet access get blocked in any other machine as well so I goti it phisically unplugged until I can solve it out. Additionally I can say I was trying to download OpenSUSE 11.4 in the OpenSUSE laptop, using a BitTorrent client, but ended the process as well thinking it was taking all the bandwidth

plugged into what? (router? dsl-modem?)
maybe you have a fried network card in that desktop…
maybe the wire between the desktop and the ‘What’ it is plugged into is
bad…
maybe the place to plug into the What is fried…
maybe when the desktop crashed (a couple of times) you lost information
previously stored in config files…have you check the hard drive
(fsck) to make sure it is all ok?
why did it crash? maybe the reason for the crashes is also the reason it
can’t network any more ??

When I referred to plug/unplug I was talking about the DSL modem actually. I’ll verify the ethernet cable to make sure it still works as you suggest
I was using Kdenlive when it crashed, just the application not all the system, and was trying to decouple the clip monitor window
Just to confirm, is it possible that a faulty LAN card or ethernet cable consumes all the bandwidth? I mean, to interfere with every other machine ability to connect to the Internet? Remember this only happens when the Desktop is on and plugged to the DSL modem
Yes, basically my Desktop is wired" and the laptops are wireless connected to the DSL modem. Is the only piece of HW I use to connect (i.e. no additional router, switch or w/ever as is the simplest domestic connection)
When the desktop is ON and wire connected to the router. Other devices cannot connect with wireless.
But if the desktop is OFF / Not connected. Other devices work wireless OK.

But if you were using the desktop to download torrents and it was set with un-limited upload and download, then it could be VERY slow.
Actually the only computer that started a Torrent was the laptop. I ended it quickly when the problem started. The Desktop was only video editing. Originally I believed the problem was caused by the Torrent but last test was on the Desktop only with web browsers, no download at all, just surfing
I’m thinking on reinstall OS, actually upgrade it to 11.4. Do you think this could help? My concern is that I hadn’t discovered the origin of the problem so I can’t be sure how to avoid it or fix it if it happens again
