Internet Connection Problem

Hi friends… I am new to linux and i recently installed Opensuse 11.1 on my system and the hardware specs are Amd Athlon X2 3600+,3gb ram,Nvidia 9500Gt,Asus M2n Mx. I am having problems with installing compiz and i already posted that. i tried all the possible solutins but nothing happened. Iam dual booting with windows Xp and i have a Internet connection in Xp. I want to use the “One click install” feature in OpenSuse for this compiz to be enabled but i was unable to configure my net conection. Plz tell me how to enable internet in OpenSuse 11.1 {KDE}. Its showing something like eth0 card found but not configured. I dont have any additional networkcard except theone integrated in the chipset.

i tried configuring with the Network Connection wizard but nothing happened.I have the Ip address, Gateway and subnetmask of my Xp connection but dont know if it will work for linux.

Do you connect to a device that provides DHCP? If not, you will have to enter the network specs manually. Try the IP address, network mask and default gateway listed in XP.

Of course, you’ll also need DNS. See if you can get those from XP. Without DNS, you’ll be able to ping raw IP addresses, and your browser will say something like “looking up [sitename.com] …” until it times out.

If you can get the vendor info on your network card, that might help, too. If it’s a Broadcom, be warned that some of those are known to act badly with Linux. (Sorry.)

You need to configure your Network Card with YAST. YAST–>Network
Devices–>Network Card. Most, but by no means all, networks will use DHCP.
So unless you know your’s does not, I would first try configuring your card
to use DHCP. The DHCP server should provide all the settings you need.

If you know DHCP does not work, or after trying it fails, then follow
smpoole7’s advice. Just be aware that if you set the IP on your Linux
machine to be the same as your Windows, they can not both be connected at the
same time.

And just to make it even clearer, here are some screenshots showing the config for DHCP-assigned IP addressing and for hand-coded fixed IP addressing:

yeah, i had the same problem. I ended up switching back to SuSE 9.3 and am trying to update to 11.1
