"Interface doesnt support scanning"

Hi there, Ive just tried following the helpful steps to get wireless working through the “My wireless doesn’t work - a primer on what I should do next” forum. I was able to follow all the steps but got stuck after trying to determine if my adapter is receiving any broadcasts. I’ve found the pci/bus number and access codes using the console, they are as follows:
07:00.0 Ethernet controller: Atheros Communications Inc. AR2413 802.11bg NIC(rev 01)
and:
07:00.0 0200: 168c:001a (rev 01)
Using Less I couldnt see any sign of needing any firmware, (unless its in a cryptic language not obvious to a linux rookie).
Also my ESSID has no value and in the forum help it It doesnt say what to do in this case. This is what appears when I enter the command “/usr/sbin/iwconfig”
**lo no wireless extensions.

eth0 no wireless extensions.

wmaster0 no wireless extensions.

wlan0 IEEE 802.11g ESSID:""
Mode:Managed Frequency:2.412 GHz Access Point: Not-Associated
Tx-Power=27 dBm
Retry min limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr=2352 B
Link Quality:0 Signal level:0 Noise level:0
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0**
and after making a scan request the following appears:
**lo Interface doesn’t support scanning.

eth0 Interface doesn’t support scanning.

wmaster0 Interface doesn’t support scanning.

wlan0 No scan results**

Any pointers will be greatly appreciated. I feel im getting closer.
Thanks,
Michael

Notice your device listed here
HCL/Network Adapters (Wireless - openSUSE

Madwifi is recommended
Atheros madwifi - openSUSE

The page for the HCL/Network Adapters…, has no text. I couldnt see any devices listed there. Im assuming I should simply install madwifi anyways?
Thanks for the quick reply.
Michael

Hardware - openSUSE

don’t know what happened there
go to the wireless section from here

Yes I’m a puzzled penguin. So Ive got as far as downloading Madwifi onto my desktop. I’m trying to follow the instructions off the Madwifi website for installation, however being a beginner and puzzled I’m not sure how to open the terminal in the source directory after unpacking. I clicked on “Extract”, after clicking on it and it opens with “Ark” is this the same as unpacking? From there any command I enter in terminal is saying “command not found” Im obviously not doing something right.
Any pointers? thanks.
Michael

Didn’t you use the Use one click??
http://software.opensuse.org/ymp/openSUSE%3A11.0/standard/madwifi.ymp

Any other source that needs installing from an archive
Put the archive in a local folder and you should be able to right click extract here
there is usually a text file giving instructions for install

you may need to install
make
gcc

first from the repos

Thank you. I tried that and it seemed to install. It opened yast and said the install was successful. However from here Im lost again. Ive tried configuring the internet options but didnt get very far. And now I think I might have the previous Madwifi unpacked as well as having installed the one click option. Im not sure how to find what Ive just installed. Perhaps I dont need to worry about it. I looked at some of the text files and install files but they seem to explain different modes of installation that look complicated to me. I seem to need almost a step by step walk through if anyone has the patience for that.
Thanks very much so far.
Michael

How do I install make?
Thanks,
Michael

It’s in the repos

open yast - software management
serach : make
check

you might also see if: gcc
is installed
