Intel ICH10R - 11.1RC1

Anyone had any luck with 11.1 RC1 and Intel onboard sound (82801JR - ICH10R family)? I know it is only RC1 and I will trying again in a few days with final release install.

Also, I got some funky screensaver graphic issue when I tried switching user (the wife got yelled at and I apologized profusely for the yelling… :-)).

Sound should work. Did you try working your way through the openSUSE audio troubleshooting guide?
SDB:AudioTroubleshooting - openSUSE

thanks, oldpc and i did. matter of fact, it was your post in the other thread that i followed… i will keep trying, but it is not critical at this point for me to worry about.

this is a new build and i expected to run into a few kinks here and there.

If you wish to pursue this, then I need some more info to try and provide suggestions …

To test if your sound is working, I recommend you try copy and pasting the following into a gnome-terminal or a kde konsole:speaker-test -Dplug:front -c2 -l5 -twavyou should hear a lady’s voice saying “front-left”, “front-right” five times. Note Linux is case sensitive.

If that does not work, try a shorter form version:speaker-test -c2 -l5 -twavIf you hear sound (ie if you hear the lady’s voice), then please post here, let us know this fact, and explain more as to what your sound problem might be.

If that does not work, and if you do not hear the lady’s voice, then we need more information to help solve your problem. To provide more information, with your PC connected to the internet copy and paste the following into a gnome-terminal or konsole:

wget -O alsa-info.sh http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-info.sh && bash alsa-info.sh

When the script completes it will pass you a URL. Please post that URL here.

or alternatively (since you have 11.1 RC1), in a gnome-terminal or kde konsole type:/usr/sbin/alsa-info.shand post here the URL it provides.

Also, please copy and paste the following into a gnome-terminal or konsole and post the output here.rpm -qa | grep alsa
rpm -qa | grep pulse
rpm -q libasound2
uname -a
cat /etc/modprobe.d/sound

hello oldcpu, here is the information you requested in your last reply. this is a new install (not RC1) of 11.1 final release. i appreciate you helping me get my audio working. thanks!

I had an issue with an intel soundcard…slightly different but used the snd-hda-intel driver. My issue was that the card detected perfectly fine, but it couldn’t open a sound port, according to the tests mentioned below. After quite a while of mucking about and searching on google I eventually found the answer and it was easy but not necessarily that obvious. Restart the alsa sound daemon! Not sure why it wasn’t available from the get go but hey it seems to work well now.
I also discovered mine used the digital output (not analog and not digital spdif) even though you connect an analog set of speakers into the analog line out ports physically on the back of the pc…so check that setting in phonon (multimedia in kde settings)

i am using gnome. i tried restarting alsasound daemon, but not sure where to check the multimedia settings with gnome. sound?

I see from another post that you are a gnome user. This could be a tough nut to crack, as you have new hardware, and you need to wrestle with the buggy aspects of pulse audio, where gnome is more susceptible to such problems. Its possible you will need to update your alsa sound driver to a newer "specially packaged for openSUSE version), but before trying that, take a look at your mixer:

Once you get basic sound, you can then back off to significantly lower levels to remove distortion. Second, you have a mixer switched OFF. Try switching it ON. Third, you have a mix of digital audio settings (IEC958) that is confusing. You have digital audio OFF in one place, yet you have digital audio selected in to other places. What are you intentions there?

You should be able to control your mixer settings using alsamixer.

Further to this, I note on your “sig” that you are using an intel dp45sg mobo. Is this the motherboard that is giving you the sound problem? I did do a search on it, and noted some Ubuntu users had tried and failed to get sound working on it.

I noted this codec: IDT 92HD73E1X5 , which is very new, and quite possibly not yet supported in alsa. Further searching gave me this Bug #271519 “Low volume, No sound: Intel HDA 82801J (ICH10)” : Bugs : linux package : Ubuntu which indicates a Ubuntu user did get it functioning, although they had a low volume problem (which supports my suggestions to move the volume up to 95% when testing).

Seaching here for IDT and 92HD suggests many fixes in 1.0.18 of alsa:
Changes v1.0.17 v1.0.18 - AlsaProject
and openSUSE-11.1 comes with a mix of 1.0.17 and 1.0.18 which suggests to me you likely need to update alsa.

To update open a gnome terminal and type “su” (no quotes, enter root password) and then with root permissions and your pc connected to the internet send (copy and paste to the gnome terminal) the following six commands, one at a time, in sequence, to update your alsa:

 zypper ar http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/multimedia:/audio/openSUSE_11.1/ multimedia
zypper install alsa alsa-oss alsa-oss-32bit alsa-plugins alsa-plugins-pulse alsa-utils alsa-tools alsa-firmware libasound2
 zypper rr multimedia
zypper ar http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/multimedia:/audio:/KMP/openSUSE_11.1/ multimedia
zypper install alsa-driver-kmp-default
zypper rr multimedia

and then restart your pc and test your sound with the sound test I mentioned above. Also check your mixer settings very carefully.

There are dozens of different hardware configurations that use the snd-hda-intel driver, many of which require a different approach. In my experience, one often needs identical hardware for the same approach to work.

thank you, oldcpu. the update worked with sound coming through clearly at 95% or higher volume setting. which is fine with me since i am using a headphone. thanks again for the help!

Congratulations in getting sound to work.

Thanks for sharing your solution.
