Intel HDMI audio with NVidia graphics card insatalled

I’m trying to get audio output from my intel 4600 graphics over HDMI, while a nvidia card is installed. I can’t install the xf86-video-intel driver because it keeps the system from booting. I used to be able to do it with my AMD card, however it needed that driver installed. I can see the device listed in

aplay -L

hdmi:CARD=HDMI,DEV=0    HDA Intel HDMI, HDMI 0
    HDMI Audio Output
hdmi:CARD=HDMI,DEV=1
    HDA Intel HDMI, HDMI 1
    HDMI Audio Output

but playing a test sound doesn’t play anything, and in fact the receiver shows no cable connected. Is there a way to get this to work without installing the xf86 intel driver? I’m on factory with MATE but am planning on going to 13.2 when it’s released.
