First of all, I’m sorry for my bad english. I’m brazilian and I have searched in brazilian forums, but I find nothing.
Well, I installed the Linux opensuse on Lenovo Z400 laptop. Lenovo z400 comes with Windows 8 and a video manager (intel/geforce). The problem is: the GeForce card is activated all the time and it consumes so much energy.
I accessed the download area in GeForce website and downloaded a file called:
NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-295.40.run
When i try to run this file in terminal, this message appears:
ERROR: Unable to find the system utility ld; please make sure you have the package ‘binutils’ installed. If you do have binutils installed, then please check that ld is in your PATH.
Someone can help-me?

First of all, that driver is completely outdated. The current version is 337.xx.
Second, you cannot just use that driver on an optimus (i.e. hybrid intel+nvidia) system.
You have to use Bumblebee: http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:NVIDIA_Bumblebee
This should power down the nvidia card when it is not in use.
But personally I don’t have any experience with that, so cannot really help you I’m afraid.

That’s strange. Do you have the package “binutils” installed? I’d think it should be by default.
Anyway, if you use the packages from the repo, the necessary dependencies should be installed automatically.
You could also probably disable the nvidia card in your BIOS settings, and just use the intel if you prefer that.
Before putting in too much effort,
You might want to research which GPU might be better for your use.
The following more or less confirms what I suspected… Both GPUs are likely going to deliver approximately the same performance (you’ll need to research exactly what exists in your machine). Which would make one wonder why a manufacturer would do this, you’d think that using up the space for an external GPU would imply there is a significant benefit.
