Intel graphics driver: try install or wait?

Hi guys,

I have a laptop with the Intel GM 965 graphic adapter. This card really has a lot of problems with openSUSE 11.1 - it freezes with 3D applications, as Compiz and 3D games, the laptop does not suspend, neither to ram nor disk, and I cannot watch movies in Real Player when XVideo is enabled.

But, yesterday I read in the Intel Linux Graphics site that a new driver was released in April 15 and should fix lot of bugs in Intel cards. Then, what I want to know is: may I install this driver in my laptop without problems? Have someone tried? Is there someone working for update Mesa and Xorg packages to work with this drivers, so that I can got it in a openSUSE update?

This is all.

Ednilton.

I have this graphics on my laptop. Works flawlessly - no config needed. Out of the box perfect.

I am happy for knowing that this graphics cards works fine for you.
But it does not work fine for me! I wish I had bought I laptop with I card
that “just work”. Furthermore, there are thousands of results in a simple
search in Google that proves this card has lot of bugs with the drivers
that are present in the released openSUSE 11.1.

Still here, in this forums, we can find many threads that treat about the
bugs of this card with openSUSE 11.1.

I would just like to say that “Intel GM 965 graphics cards has many bugs
with the driver I use, this is a fact”. The guys responsible by the Intel drivers
have already realized this. So, I do not wast time arguing if the cards have
bug ou not! The new driver is available. I want to know if I should install it
or not.

Thanks for replying!

Pretty sure it is in the xorg repo well 95%. Not running it, not tried, but just extracted the src and have xf86-video-intel-2.7.0.tar.bz2 which sounds like what you’re after.

I doubt you’ll have to many implications from running it but I suspect it will change the whole of xorg.

I have similar problems with my 945GM, should I then go ahead and update via Yast from the following repo: Index of /repositories/X11:/XOrg/openSUSE_11.1/i586

Nooooooooooooo!
Do not do this! :open_mouth:
I did this today, and I had many troubles! The X server did not want initialise.
We have to wait for a oficial update. Note that X11/Xorg repository is a
repository of unstable packages.

Or, try intall the driver from Intel Linux Graphics .
If you get it working fine, tell us.

Bye.

Thanks for the warning! I’ve never installed a driver by hand before in Linux, so I thought this repo was the way to go, but since this is my primary box I don’t want to lose it. I guess I’ll have to wait for the next version of openSUSE…

I have an fj si1520 with the same intel card. It worked flawlessy until today when i decided to upgrade xorg. Now x won’t start and even sax refuses to work. So be carefull when you decide to upgrade. Now i’m curious: does someone certifies those ’ upgrades '? I don’t think so. I reverted to the old xorg from the dvd but no luck. If someone is smart enough please…

Hi,

There are no certifies for those “upgrades”. The X11/XOrg repository is for
packages that are in development and because this they are unstable packages.
You have to try these packages by your own risk! So, be careful when trying them.
I once had good results with Mesa packages from X11/XOrg repository, but when
I installed the next package, every thing was bad! :frowning:

No way, if no one tries the driver from Intel Linux Graphics, we have to
wait for official updates in Mesa packages for openSUSE (maybe wait for
openSUSE 11.2), or try I distribution of Linux with the newest Intel drivers.
I think that a distribution with these newest drivers will not be possible soon,
since the driver was released in April 15.

Well, good look for every ourselves.

Bye.

Well. I think that if something is proposed from the opensuse repos it has to pass some check. I already checked other distros( my pc is a multibooting machine). This seems to be a problem related to xorg so common. The biggest caveat seems to be drm. I was able to roll back to the previous version and now it’s up again but shame

This is many peoples problem, the only ones that pass some check are OSS, Non-OSS, Update, then you’ll likely not get any trouble on the popular ones i.e packman. But still they not passed no check till people like you have tested them, then they’ll go into one of the proper repo’s.
