Intel drivers crash after login

Hi there. Upgraded to Opensuse 12.2. Basically If I try to load the intel or intellegacy drivers via 50-device.conf the system will drop to prompt after splash screen.

I’m having to use Vesa drivers and am unable to change my resolution, Any help will be much appreciated.

Thanks, Nick.

I’m still suffering with this issue, have spent countless hours trailing the net for answers, I think I need advice specific to my system…Any ideas atall?

Thanks, Nick.

Hi
So what is your graphics hardware;

/usr/sbin/hwinfo --gfxcard

I have intel here working fine, with sna enabled though;

what does that mean?
that is, what were you running before and how did you “upgrade”?

that is, which of these three supported methods did you follow step by step:

http://tinyurl.com/93uemsr
http://tinyurl.com/7l4m2td

why do you want to do that? that is, what driver did the install script
decide was best for you system, and what was wrong with that selection?

i can only guess you had some kind of problem, to solve it did you go to
here:

http://tinyurl.com/23mgej6

in that guide, did you get no relief from the “1st thing to try”??? if
not, what did you do next?

or to here: http://tinyurl.com/37v9y7m

and, what results did you get from those guides, before you resorted to
editing 50-device.conf ?

do you have a copy of the original 50-device.conf ??

> the system will drop to
> prompt after splash screen.

that is the expected behavior if the video driver doesn’t meet the needs
of your video [Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated
Graphics Controller (rev 07)]

> I’m having to use Vesa drivers and am unable to change my resolution,

there must be an intel driver which will work for you, if correctly put
into play…

> Any help will be much appreciated.

i guess one of those guides will get you going…if you have a backup
copy of the original conf file to put back into play…

Sorry I should have been specific, this was a fresh install.

The system originally loaded the fbdev driver.

i can only guess you had some kind of problem, to solve it did you go to
here:

SDB:Configuring graphics cards - openSUSE

Yes I’ve been here, added the boot parameter nomodeset for inital installation as I would get a black screen after initiating the installation.

Anything to do with configuring Xorg (Xorg -configure) would result in a 'fatal server error: number of devices does not match number of detected screens" … something like that.

do you have a copy of the original 50-device.conf ??

Everything within this file was commented out. I changed this to load the vesa driver which worked but I’m very limited.

Thanks, Nick.

Hi
Can you add i915.modeset=0 rather than nomodeset to the bootup grub
options via YaST -> bootloader, reboot and see how that goes.

No change when loading the intel drivers, have to fall back to vesa :\

A search on the 8086:2a42 indicates the hardware is a GM45 - there are a number of recent bug reports on this hardware impacting X. I recommend searching on 8086:2a42 and GM45 to see if one can find any work arounds.

Ugh. I submitted a reply a couple of minutes ago, but it looks like the internet ate my post. Anyway, will try to briefly summarize the points:

From the output of the xorg.log file you supplied, it looks like the X configuration step proceeds towards using the conf.d dirctory files, but finds no applicable layout, screen, device… so switches to using a default screen config and tries to auto add a device to it. I suspect that, through PCIID, an Intel adapter is detected and by default the “intel” driver is attempted to be loaded for that hardware. However, the “intel” driver comes back essentially saying there is no hardware available for which we support, and then X fails to load and you are dropped to the prompt on the Console (expected behaviour as noted above).

A point: the “intel” driver is a KMS driver (kernel (video) mode setting/switching). If you use the kernel boot parameter nomodeset inconjunction with the “intel” driver, X will fall back to using the fbdev driver. fbdev is a simple driver, and of the UMS (user mode setting/switching) variety. If you wanted a better UMS driver experience, you’d want the UMS capable “intellegacy” driver.

Now the fact that you’ve passed nomodeset and the results are the same (X doesn’t load). Makes me wonder about what you’ve put in your conf.d file. As they say, show us the money! (read: can you supply the contents of your conf.d file when you are attempting to load the intel or intellegacy drivers?).

But the other curious fact is that you’ve managed to load X this same way via the vesa driver … so perhaps you aren’t at fault (user error with creating the conf.d file)

Which leads to another couple of points. You appear to be using a laptop (mobile chipset). A few users have reported problems (here in the forum) with the “intel” driver (or was it “intellegacy”?) in conjunction IIRC with swithchable graphics (IIRC w AMD). Perahps a connection here.

Hi
The Xorg log is showing “nomodeset” on the kernel command line: see line 18.266] early in the log. However, you are specifying and loading the “intel” driver (module version = 2.20.3) that requires KMS (kernel modesetting) which you are disabling with “nomodeset”. That will always fail and so doesn’t help matters.

You can boot with “nomodeset” and specify “intellegacy” driver, but in another recent thread I confirmed for another intel user that “intellegacy” is broken as shipped with 12.2. I have the same graphics device as you but in a Lenovo notebook (yours is Acer). Mine works on 12.2 with “intel” driver as shipped.

When you succeeded with “fbdev” driver, did you boot with “nomodeset”. If the answer to that is yes, please confirm what happens when you boot without “nomodeset” and NO driver specified via 50-device.conf (comment out your additions there or delete them).

I will look out for your reply. :slight_smile:

Good catch.

PS. It doesn’t look good as I noticed this bug #989658 on google concerning ubuntu. Same h/w as the OP I believe. Its about 6 months old but fixes seem to take some time in arriving on intel driver.

Quick check on my wife’s Asus with GM45 shows

it is a system updated from 11.4 -> 12.1 -> 12.2.
No xorg.conf in use and also no customizations to xorg.conf.d files.
No special boot parameters.

@ImperiusMortis:
So maybe undoing all changes to any of that files could result in a
working X, of course there is a slight difference, her laptop shows rev
09 and not rev 07, but the same 8086:2a42.

Edit: Actually, it looks like it could very well be related; recall:

:slight_smile: This stuff is never easy, so take your time to digest the various posts.

Thanks for the reply so far. I just need to know if that piece of Xorg log you included shows the last few lines and end point of that log? My guess is it doesn’t, but if the rest is about “FBDEV” driver messages, I don’t need it, just confirm please.

Hi
What happens if you turn the file back to default, everything hashed
