Intel did it again. 2.6.2 driver broke my xserver.

at least that is what i assume happened, since this started to occur after i upgraded the xorg-x11-video-driver package:

pastebin - collaborative debugging tool

there were one or two updates after the upgrade to 2.6.2 that could have “broke” it too though.

although, i did upgrade the kernel recently too to 2.6.27-19, and a lot of people seem to be having problems with it…

Hi!
I’ve got the same problem, but with an ati card.
The latest video-driver package also breaks X for me, so it’s probably not the intel driver.

Hi,

I don’t know if this is directly related, but I have just installed the latest driver for ATI Radeon HD 2400 XT and my display isn’t working at all - I get accidental gibberish on the screen but nothing I can make any sense of.

Can anyone tell me how to recover from this?

The only way I can use the machine at all right now is the live CD.

turns out it was the opensuse packager from the Xorg/X11 OBS repo.

they pushed the package with the new intel driver without pushing the required package with the new xserver version.

i was told that upgrading to factory (with kernel 2.6.28+) would fix the problems. that caused other problems with the intel driver but with the same effect.

so i just reinstalled the OS and i am staying away from the Xorg/X11 OBS repo. and for the time being i’m also staying away from factory. there are issues with GEM (at least with 2.6.29) & the intel driver. it seems to be a mess right now.

Just wanted to let you know that some packages must have been updated because i just updated all xorg/mesa related stuff from the xorg/x11 repo and everything seems to be working fine now. I have an ati card though (wanted to get the latest radeon driver).

If you update and something goes wrong, you can just boot to console and use yast from there to “update” to the packages from the opensuse dvd.

Actually when using a Intel GM45 card, you have to make a decisions, If you use the original XOrg rpm files included in the installation media or OSS repo, it gives you ability to view video and some non 3D games, but you can’t use 3D apps or it will crash, and using the XOrg repo, gives you the ability to play 3D games and use 3D apps, but you can’t view some video extensions, and also while monitoring the CPU temp, it increases to 70°C or more.

I’m performing some tests to see if there is a way to see videos and be able to use 3D apps using the XOrg repo.
