Intel core i5 or i7

which one would you choose Intel core i5 or i7 and why

I think the i5 uses dual channel memory while the i7 uses triple channel, at least the original ones did. And I think the i7 supports hyper-threading which makes each CPU look like two while the i5 does not.

Surely the i7 CPU’s, at the same CPU speed would be faster than an i5. However, I don’t think that using an i5 will be any sort of problem with openSUSE. Go with the best you can afford and you will do just fine using SuSE.

Thank You,

From what I have read, the motherboards associated with the core i7 currently have better Linux support than those with the core i5. I suspect the situation should improve soon wrt the i5 motherboards.

I have been using an i7 for over a year now.

For my personal desktop machine I would definately opt for neither. I think it’s nice to use the latest technology in desktop PCs, because you are more flexible for a longer time when you need to upgrade or exchange broken parts, but there seem to be very few situations where my CPU is the bottleneck of the machine. At least I’m not on Gentoo where I permanently would have to compile stuff.

An i3, an Athlon II or eventually even a Sempron 140 would completely satisfy my needs.

AMD Phenom, fastest six-core. AMD rocks!

There is a 6-core version of i7 (Gulftown) available too - 970 and 980X… These are pretty expensive though compared to the AMD ones…

But the choice depends on what kind of PC it is - desktop or laptop ?

If it is laptop I’d stay away from i7 as of now because of heating issues and high power consumption… I’d choose i5 for a mobile processor…

For desktop I’d choose i7 - 860 or 875 or 930… 9xx series feature Quickpath - which might be of interest to gamers because of higher bandwidth compared to DMI…
