I’m being forced to start using an instant messaging client, so I was looking for recommendations. Any that work very well with opensuse?

Pidgin… also comes with OpenSUSE (Alt+F2 and type pidgin) and it
supports everything I’ve ever heard of protocol-wise, and several things I
have never heard of. Google Talk, AIM, ICQ, Jabber (anything else),
yahoo, Gadu Gadu, microsoft network, etc. etc. etc.
Also supports plugins, has great logging of conversations, etc.

Hi. I use Kopete, others prefer Pidgin. Centerim is a cli instant messenger.
What network (MSN, Yahoo, ICQ, etc) and what desktop (Gnome, KDE)?? I use AMSN for MSN (duh!) but I’ve hear good reports Kopete (default KDE messenger) and Pidgin (multi network messenger).
If you’re using KDE then I’d go for kopete… It has been working well with MSN and Google Talk accounts for me. It has similar look and feel as the rest of the desktop and nicely integrated to it (mainly passwords stored in kwallet).
I’m on KDE. As for network, there are a bunch (some on yahoo, aol, msn, etc) that I’d have to work with. BTW, since I have to create a profile, which network would people here recommend I join?
You should join whichever network the people you will be talking with are on. 
I have an account in the three major networks (AIM, Yahoo, MSN) and I haven’t run into anybody I wasn’t able to IM. Being able to log in to each network simultaneously from one program is nice; sometimes I forget my contacts are on different networks from one another.
The networks themselves offer features that individualize them from the others, but I’ve never seen a need for them. I use IM to chat with people, nothing more. YMMV 
Generally it is unimportant which network you are using because, Kopete fail on all protocols compared to Pidgin - the update time / file sending / speed, generally everything. …and of course with Kopete you are wasting much more space because the additional KDE packages - their size is almost big as the whole XFCE environment.

Can I be on Jabber, for example, and still IM with MSN/AIM/Yahoo people?
Kopete follow all of these protocols (i’m not sure check that!), but Pidgin does it much more better.
MSN/AIM/Yahoo is okay, but i dont see Jabber in my list, is there any other name for it? (example GTalk is called XMPP).

Jabber is the open product that implements XMPP, which Google Talk also
uses. Another plus for Pidgin… cross-platform (so you keep everything
working on other boxes as you move around.

If I have an account with google talk, can i send an IM to someone on AIM/MSN/Yahoo?
If you are logged in only with your GTalk account while the others are using their AIM/MSN/Yahoo account then I think it’s impossible.
