The title may not sound right for this forum, but I think this might have something to do with the handling of the hard drive of linux …
I am trying to put Win XP on my laptop, but the installation program says that there’s no hard drive found. I am already using openSuSE and the BIOS says that there is a hard drive properly installed. I used Vista and it worked good, too. Do I need to format the hard drive first (because the problem is caused by the partitioning/FS that Linux uses?
BTW it’s a ThinkPad T61 if that helps…
Another question (since I’m already opening a thread about Win): Where can I get a Windows Vista Business installation DVD? I didn’t get one with my laptop and I can’t find any DVD images online (at least not legal ones). I already have a key so I don’t want to buy a new DVD… The Win XP thing is just a makeshift.
How many drives do you have ?
Without a utility windows can not read a Linux native file system
I can remember at this moment remember the name of the utility
Normally a windows key is used by the first owner of the original
DVD and registerd bij Microsoft
So if you like to have the updates and support of M B.G. you need a legal version
Hard drive is not found cause old fashioned, old aged and neadertal xp does not have sata drivers.U need to preinstall sata drivers for xp to “see” your hard drive.Check your hard disk’s manufacter page and follow the instruction u might find there on how to do this.
U cannot find any vists imges cause its illigal and i dont think that anyone(includung me )in here could give u a link to dl illigal softaware.Check if u have a recovery disk or else contact M$ and ask for directions
I must have super natural powers.
Buy my self a month ago a brand new computer with 3 sata2 HD.
Install Windows XP myself with no problem at all directly from the XP install CD
If it was the cause of the linux partition as u say at your previous post, that is deffinatelly not the case, cause IF xp could “see” the HD it should also be able to see the linux partition, flagged as “unkonw partition”.
Xp does not have drivers to read Linux FS but the partitioner of xp installation should be able to see an “unknown partition”,so its a case of HD drivers here.
Do not confuse
Browsing Linux FS from windows and partitioning Linux partitions from windows
So u partiotioned the disk 100Gb and 60Gb,and then u installed suse at the 100GB and then u install xp in the 60 GB and the partitioner of xp during the installation could only see 60GB and not two paritions?

Was that XP, XP SP1 or XP SP2? Also, some systems treat SATA as pseudo
IDE, which overcomes the problem.
The easiest way is probably to put SATA drivers on a floppy and load
during the installation with “load drivers” option (F6?).

All I know is that my computer is custom build for me by a company there core business is to sold there computers to smaller companies
After writing down my hardware wishes he ask me if I like to have XP or Vista.
My answer was NO.And than he ask me with Linux distros I am going to use.
My answer was most likely Suse and Mandriva
I ask him why he like to know it.
His answer was to set you,re BIOS.
When I pickup my computer a few days later
I told him that I change my mind and like to have XP.
His answer no problem ,he goes back to his department store and come back with a Cd
while the computer was in box by me.
He said this the one you need and he charge me extra for XP
The strange thing is MEPIS and FREEBSD will not run on this PC complaining about a lot of things
The original XP installation media did not have SATA drivers. Consequently, F6 with a driver floppy was required for this version of Windows setup to install on a SATA drive. But . . . there were cases where the original XP installation did recognize a SATA drive. Many SATA controllers (which is what the driver communicates with, not the disk itself) were in fact PATA controllers with a patch, or used other techniques.
There are later versions of the installation media which have an updated HAL (e.g., a CD which also has SP2) that includes default SATA drivers, consequently this media has no problem. Also, before this was available and/or as a substitute - this is what is often used by corp IT or IT shops taking advantage of different licensing - the installation media is “slipstreamed”, which is a technique to build an installation to include additional service packs and patches.
well, my version comes with the sp2 … though i’m gonna try it with a driver with an usb stick (unfortunately, i dont use floppys anymore they’re all replaced by usb sticks, cd-rws and email attachments)
yeah neanderthal xp, that one made me laugh. i mean there have been many arguments against win xp and windows in general … but i have to admit that ms has the monopoly for a reason: it works, usually, dont take me as an example i always find a way to crash my os.
neanderthal … you’re a comedian
thanks so far. i really didn’t think of getting a driver for the harddrive, i was naive enough to think that these crucial drivers are standart, even for ms.
EDIT: ohh since this has nothing to do with installing SuSE, this thread might not be appropriate for this ‘sub-forum’ maybe some admin could move it…

I,too, bought a T61, that came with Vista Business. It doesn’t come with
recovery disks, and the only way to get them is to backup Vista to DVD. I
tried doing that and after a whole night, it still wasn’t finished, so I
used the XP recovery disks to install XP, and just blew Vista away.
THEN I installed openSUSE 11, and everything went fine. I’ve learned over
the years to always install Windows first, because it’s just too stupid to
work with other Operating Systems.
If you’ve installed XP over Vista, I think you’re SOL.
