i have a question about VLC (the media player), i noticed that VLC can get installed using the official repositorys but there is a nonofficial VLC repository too listed repository overview (its is the same one that is used in the installation description on the VLC website: http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-suse.html)
So my question is, which one should i use? What is the benefit of using the VLC repository?
The VLC version included in openSUSE does not contain support for most codecs for legal reason.
Also, the VLC repo contains a newer version.
Anyway, I would suggest to install VLC from the Packman repo rather, not the VLC repo.
It’s the same version. but Packman contains a lot more multimedia stuff. And having both the Packman and VLC repos will give problems.
So add the Packman repo via YaST->Software Repositories (click on Add, select “Community Repositories” and enable it in the list).
Then just install the package vlc-codecs, this should update all other vlc packages as well and give you full multimedia support in VLC…
You might also do a “full repository vendor change” to the Packman repo, to install full versions of other multimedia software as well.

Currently, vlc is distributed by openSUSE with a trick. The program is
provided by the “official” repository, and a matching codec package is
distributed on packman (and I think also on videolan). Both are prepared
by the same people, so you do not need to pick both from packman.

You could have VLC from videolan, and XINE from packman, for instance.
As long as you don’t mix toolchains, it should work - but it is not as
easy to do as “switch packages to this repo” on one click.

In theory yes.
But some of the other needed multimedia libs in those two repos are incompatible, so in practice either VLC won’t work or XINE (and more things from Packman) won’t work (or even neither of them).
Since Packman contains the exact same VLC version (again, both are just links to the same package on OBS), installing the one from the VLC repo and risking breaking your (multimedia) system doesn’t really make sense.
And Packman normally contains newer versions of those libraries anyway.
The only “advantage” the VLC repo has over Packman is that it contains VLC beta versions.
