i am newbie and using opensuse 12.1 i don’t know how to install all availible patches and updates can anybody tell what i have to do?

Just run yast online update and follow your nose 
Otherwise, there is a very good book at doc.opensuse.org.

correct, but let me add that Apper (the ‘system tray’ updater if you
are using KDE–you should always declare your desktop environment) is
very badly broken and should be disabled or uninstalled…
always use YaST > Software (on left) > Online Update (on right) for
updates and patches…
it is an easy 3 clicks to success:
-click Yast
-give root password
-click Online Update
-see if there are updates
-decide if you want them or not
-click Accept
