Is there anyway to install Suse from the LiveCD while in runlevel 3? I need to install video drivers, but I don’t seem to be able to because Suse is not actually installed. I can’t get to the GUI to install Suse that way because of my display troubles. Any ideas?
Hi
When you boot the system use the boot option vga=normal or try vga=vesa
I think you can even press one of the F keys to select the display
resolution (suggest 1024x768, which is also the boot option vga=0x317)

I tried both of the vga options you suggested without sucess…Suse still boots into the GUI with junk on screen. Anyone know how to install from liveCD via runlevel 3? HELP! :?
Hi,
Have you tried selecting the ‘Text Mode’ option after pressing F3 key in the very first screen?
That should do the trick.
You have the details here:
Installation/11.0 Live CD - openSUSE

Honestly, I don’t recommend installing from the LiveDVD. Why? Well, it only
provides KDE4 (vs KDE3.5) and Gnome. Great if you want Gnome, problematic if
you want KDE. KDE4 is known to be, uh, needing lots of love. Yeah… That’s
it.
Try installing from the Install DVD. You’ll get the choice of Gnome, KDE3.5,
KDE4.0… and all the software goodness you’d like.
AND… (but wait! there’s more!!)
If you boot the Installation DVD and type ‘textmode=1 vga=0’ on the options
line, you should be able to fully install the system from a text mode.
This ALSO works on the network install CD, which I use quite often since it’s
only about 70Meg, and essentially does the same thing, just needs an internet
connection to install through.
(Call now! Operators are standing by!) (Did they wait ALL day for me to
call? The fools!! I’ve been building up an immunity to Iocane Powder!)

I tried typing “text mode” in my boot option but that didn’t do anything different. I can’t use the guide you suggested because I can’t see my GUI. Does anyone know how to install SUSE from liveCD via runlevel 3?
LiveCD works fine for me because all I want is GNOME. Oh and I tried to boot from liveCD using boot options “textmode=1 vga=0” and still Suse trys to boot to GUI and still I get garbage on screen. still looking for HELP!

We’ve all provided workable solutions for you, none seem to work.
Please define “Junk on the screen”, “garbage on the screen”.
Booting with vga=vesa or vga=normal or vga=0 should bring up the gui system
using the barest minimum graphic requirements… and is almost guaranteed to
work with nearly all equipment. To date, I’ve not seen anything it didn’t
work on.
Even then, booting with ‘textmode=1 vga=0’ brings up a text/console based
installer which could conceivably be used over a serial line. (don’t ask how
I know this)
Please elaborate on your machine specs.
What make/model of machine.
What video card? What model? How much ram?
How much memory in computer, not on the video card, but installed in system.
What kind of processor? What speed?
What monitor are you using? Size? Type? Make? Model?
Any other cards installed? What are they?
Have you verified the installation media you’re using? Does the md5sum
match? Did you burn it at high speed? Have you tried ANOTHER copy of the
installation media?
Everything we’ve tried “doesn’t work”. Please help US help YOU by telling us
what you have. It might be suddenly evident to someone here how to fix your
issues if we knew what we were working with.
Otherwise, we’re all just killing time.

By “junk on screen” the top third of the screen looks like a purple version of TV snow. Then there are thick horizontal alternating white/black lines going across the screen starting about midway from the top and stacking on top of each other all the way to the bottom. I can’t see any of the GUI environment. The only thing I can distinguish is my mouse “curser” which looks like a large grey square.
The macheine doesn’t have a brand as I built it myself.
AMD Athlon 64 3200
1024 mb of system memory
256 mb on board video memory
Geforce 6600gt PCIE x16
MSI motherboard MS-7185 K8N SLI
200 gb hdd
DVD drive
USB keyboard/mouse
Monitor: 22" hanspree connected with a DVI to VGA adapter
550 watt PSU
I have tried a different .iso burned onto a different disk…same results.
My hardware does work with Suse 11 because I had everything working fine yesterday.
I would really like to install from liveCD via runlevel 3…it must be possible I just don’t know how to do it.
Is there a reason why you opened a new thread for this problem? No reply to my last post there at DISPLAY TROUBLES - Page 3 - openSUSE Forums ???
For help with context, may be useful for anyone else pitching in here, to check that thread.
EDIT: Now I’m really confused. I didn’t realize you were also the same user at Boot Loop Problems - Page 2 - openSUSE Forums ???
Three threads? . . . who’s on first?
Well, looks like your machine is very similar to mine, homebrew built too. I
actually have the same video card, the GeForce 6600gt, pcie 16x. I’ll tease
you with the statement that it works VERY nicely.
ok… enough teasing…
<brainstorming ideas… something might click>
On your 6600, are you plugged into the VGA, going to DVI on monitor? or DVI,
going to VGA on monitor? Possible to switch?
The motherboard supports dual PCI-E cards… are you in primary or secondary
slot? (closest to CPU/power supply is primary)
Does it have a bios option to enable / disable the SLI options? If so, is it
disabled for single card use? The bios manual shows the use of the “SLI
Switch Card”… is it inserted as “non-SLI” mode?
Your 1G of system ram… single DIMM? or two 512’s? Green or Purple memory
slots? MSI suggests populating the GREEN slots first, then the purple. Green
slot closest to cpu first, then other, then purple closest, then other.
If you’ve got any of the “Aggressive Timing” or “High Performance” options
tweaked, you might try resetting the entire motherboard to default
settings… attempting the install, and restoring your tweaks after
installation.
Most of these are things that I can see might affect an install, and
specifically affect video… causing the distortion you’re seeing.
Very nice motherboard.

After a several day break and a trip to the beaches I, thanks to all your help, have successfully installed and am happily using openSuse! Thanks to all for the valuable advice
There you are again! Well, glad it’s all sorted out.
