Hello again. I currently have a comp (1.5 Ghz pentium M, 2Gb RAM, 55 GB HDD). I have 10.2 Gb of free space. Is this enough to install suse 11 and still keep windows xp as is? Basically i just want to be able to choose which OS i want to run at boot up. Whats the appropriate size partition i should give suse? And will i be able to access my music and pictures from xp through suse? Sorry for all the questions, but im somewhat of a noob.
Such a subjective thing really. Well, here are three scenarios for you:
Completely locked to the 10.2 GB – put no separate /home partition, just define 9.5 Gb for / and 1 Gb for swap.
Parsimonious – 8GB for root and a /home partition of 8Gb and a swap partition of 1 Gb – not ideal. This would entail shrinking the windows partiton.
Constrained generosity – If you have more space to size windows downward try 10Gb for root, 15 for /home and 2 for swap.
Ideal: delete windows – LOL & guffaws
If resize windows, defrag it first and back up the key data – for sure back it up.

i am in this category.

working to get into this.

the defrag part is usually missed by many.

I’m not just a pretty face, you know.
…In fact I’m not even a pretty face.
I’m begging for some simple step by step instructions to install open suse 11 in the unassigned space on my hard drive. I created a partition for windows xp and allowed 23gb of space unused for installation of open suse 11.
I don’t know what I’m doing. I thought it would be an easy
process but I continue to get bootloading nfs error and don’t know what to do. Suse sees that I have 23gb of
unassigned space but it won’t let me install the OS to it.
Please help me! I really want to try Linux but this is putting me off. I know there is a solution but I’m a newbie and would appreciate step by step instructions written so that a 10 year old could understand.
to start with, reconfigure the space you set aside for linux the way Swerdna suggested

At the begining of this forum is a “sticky” written by oldcpu. This should be required reading before you try to install linux.Oldcpu references a couple of articles in the opensuse wiki that you might want to start with.
Newebies: Thanks to Kevin Dupuy, you can also see a full installation walkthrough on the openSUSE wiki:
Installation/11.0 DVD Install - openSUSE… or for the Live CD:
Installation/11.0 Live CD - openSUSEThis is an excellent reference to point to, if you have an installation failure (after the GUI starts) and you wish to point to the failure location.
After you get suse 11 installed, if you plan to use it for your multimedia stuff, yes you can do it but you will have to install some applications to do it; you will also have to install the codex required (not included with install package because of copywright issues) You should read Oldcpu’s sticky at the begining of the multimedia forum.

How on earth do I do that??? I need step by step.
1.2.3.4. Do this, do that, type this in, push this.
I followed the live cd wiki instructions but can’t
install it to the unassigned space and get the nfs
bootloading error.
I need instructions a 6-12 year old could understand.
I’ve searched the forum and can’t find a solution that
doesn’t require a computer programming degree.
Help! SOS! I’m a newbie and need someone to hold my hand.
I know that after the fact it will look like child’s play but right now it looks like sending someone to the moon.
I just looked at the link you suggested and it still seems
addressed to those experienced in Linux. I looked at the
boot section and it seems way over my head.
Again please keep it simple.
Just tell me how to put opensuse in my unused hard drive space. I already have one partion with windows xp on it.
I created a 90gb partition for XP and want to use the remaining free, unused, unassigned, unpartioned space for
Open Suse 11.
Thanks for being patient with me and appreciate the already
offered above help and advice.
ok, I was able to install it. I used some tutorials and links that I found on google.
Thanks for all the help. I have much to learn.
