Installing Suse 11.2

Hello everyone i’m kind of stuck here and was hoping to get some differents views on m problems.

First of all i’m a beginner in linux, i’m not familiar with every command but i do understand the “linux” way.

Anyway i trying to install openSuse on my new computer which is a desktop, and here is my first problem : the 64 bits is kinda buggy (i got a AMD Sempron 1250) meaning sometimes it doesn’t load on boot, sometimes it stays on the auto login screen… I saw on a thread here that it was a bit unstable so i went back to the 32 bits version.

The install goes smoothly everything’s fine until i see a problem of hardware compatibility with my graphic card (a Radeon HD4650). I know that desktop effects are not essential but i do want them and try to bypass this problem.

And there’s goes the funny stuff. I saw a hdradeon driver in the opensuse build service, i install it from there, reboot, and goes to text mode console. Impossible to go to the usual gnome desktop.

If i try to install it from the file got in the ATI site, it’s much harder (encoded caracters problems… etc…) and i’m facing the same problem.

I got it also with the repository way. I boot, the screen flickers while loading, and i go to text mode console.

I didn’t know if i should have posted this on the hardware froum, or if i forgot some details but i would value your opinions on this.

Sorry for the long post BTW.

Thanks.

These are suggestions how to get started only.

For the beginning, try to find (buy, borrow) an nvidia graphics card. Practically all problems with graphics will go away.

And use KDE - it is more enjoyable and configurable than Gnome.

Later, as you gain experience, you can switch to your desired graphics card and desktop.

More worrysome is your observation that 32 bit worked but 64 bit didn’t. Again, consider switching to 64 bit once you learn more, since 64 bit is a little faster.

Thanks for the reply.

Well at first i tried installing with the mobo chipset : a NVIDIA GeForce 7025. And it didn’t even bother installing, the screen would turn off after loading the live cd (or USB i tried both)

So i bought a cheap graphic ATI card for that purpose.

anyway i will try a KDE 32bits install and see where it goes.

Are you installing from Live CD? Try the installation DVD.

What is happening with the nvidia card used, ATI disconnected, 32 bit, and failsafe installation options - where does the installation stop? You should at least get a terminal.

I tried 32 and 64 bits version of the live cd mounted on a live USB (both gnome). I wasn’t aware of a failsafe option but i tried every graphical settings, VESA and text mode, they all hung after the loading (some text was displayed during the VESA loading). The screen always shut down. After putting my ATI card i go all the way through the install but i can’t seem to update the driver

I tried the KDE version, if i try to enable the desktop effects, after a reboot i go to the login screen (whereas i choose auto login option) and it tells me ‘fail to login’ (i don’t know the exact words i got the french version). If i choose a failsafe boot i got a terminal that recognize my password but i don’t know what to do from there.

i’ll keep trying different things and keep you posted.

Enjoy your night !

Don’t invoke desktop effects.

Work as root.

Start yast, disable auto logins.

From terminal mode, say

startx

Also learn how to use sax or sax2. Try to configure graphics.

You seem to have a bad motherboard.
