i recently downloaded openSUSE 11.4 DVD.
i’d like to know,
1)does that DVD included both KDE & Gnome platforms? If yes,how do i switch between those?
2)currently,i’m running on windows vista so i installed openSUSE virtually using vmware player so that i can learn a bit of openSUSE before completely switching to it…,when installing i didn’t noticed any option to choose b/w kde or Gnome,is that by default?
3)moreover when installed,i didn’t saw any K-button or so…
4)when i install it as my primary OS i.e. not virtually, will i get those switching options?
5)i’m a newbie so please tell me which desktop environment do u recommend?
i read KDE is more customisable and i too love to get as many options as possible but without compromising with performance…rotfl!rotfl!rotfl!

You select to install one or the other. If you want both, once one of them is up and running, from within that you can add all the software for the other. Then when you boot the VM , at the logon screen there’s a button where you can choose which DE to log onto.

It’s there if you’re using the DVD, you just missed it
3)moreover when installed,i didn’t saw any K-button or so…
I don’t understand what u mean, please amplify
4)when i install it as my primary OS i.e. not virtually, will i get those switching options?
Once you install one of them, then you can add the other, but I noticed in 11.3 that my Gnome apps intruded into my KDE environment. Thus I avoided a dual install in 11.4 because it ****** ** ***. Having the two sets of softwares installed simultaneously in your main OS might be irritating for you.
5)i’m a newbie so please tell me which desktop environment do u recommend?
I like KDE today. Last week I liked Gnome.
i think it would take me a mllion years more to decide whether KDE or Gnome,
everyone just keeps making me more “:’(troubled:’(” and “:\confused:” whenever ask that question…
i meant that when i read installation docs,i noticed that i would see a K button(if i use KDE)on my desktop…,but i observed nothing there was just a green openSUSE logo representing “start menu”…therefore i didn’t got to know whether i was using KDE or Gnome.
Vmware player did “Easy Install” so i think it skipped that step of choosing b/w the DEs…
please tell me how to switch to other DE when i’ve installed the OS…:\
Just install another DE and you should get an option of choosing the DE in the login screen.
i installed it using DVD that contains both DEs…
did u mean that everytime i login,i will be able to choose b/w the two…???:\
As far as I know (If I’m wrong someone correct me), during the installation you choose DE (only one). Later on you can install additional one. For example you have chosen an xfce during installation, then you install KDE. What you have to do is to set the login screen as a kde (you do that easily in yast). Then in the login screen (KDE) you will have an option of a X session with two choices xfce and kde (in our example).
link for our example
How to login into KDE when in XFCE login screen?
If it showed a panel like this when u clicked the green logo it was KDE
http://www.dedoimedo.com/images/computers/2008/suse-11-live-k-menu.jpg
You check that easily just choose a KDE application with the -version option for example.
kwrite -version
Qt: 4.7.1
KDE Development Platform: 4.6.00 (4.6.0) "release 6"
KWrite: 4.6.00 (4.6.0) "release 6"
Update
Think my previous solution can be misleading, since if you have both DEs it won’t tell you much which you are currently using. What I recommend is the following.
yast -> /etc/sysconfig editor -> Desktop -> Display manager -> DISPLAYMANAGER will tell you what is your default DE.
Frim KDE go to Yast → software → software management. Then use the “view” button to switch to “Patterns”. There you can select to install the Gnome Desktop and the Gnome Base System. Voila.
yes,it was exactly like that but i read that i would see a K-button instead of that green one, like this-----
http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/images/kdegnomelucid10.png
why is that not visible…???:\
That’s an Ubuntu/Kubuntu picture not an openSUSE guide at all, LOL. The openSUSE developers altered the KDE menu to make it more useful and also changed the button style – it was just simply a patriotic whim.
oh noooooooooooo:O,
i’m so embarassed…,i didn’t thought it even at once:’(
yes,it is a Kubuntu desktop but i thought KDE is same in all linux distros…
thx a lot fot your help…rotfl!
hey thanks blah01…,rotfl!
i’ll give it a try.

FIRST: Like ‘swerdna’ i do not like to have both installed…but if i
must have both installed i have a different user for each, so that i
never have both KDE and Gnome messing with a shared set of config
files in my home! but, if you want both, there are thousands and
thousands who also do, and:
to learn which (KDE or Gnome you are running now, open the file
manager (Menu > Filemanager) if it is Dolphin or Konqueror you are
running KDE, if it is Nautilus you are running Gnome…
use YaST to install the other: YaST > Software Management > select the
Patterns tab, then if you are running KDE you will see an empty box
next to GNOME Desktop Environment and GNOME Base, single left click
both, and then press the Accept button…
or, if you are now running GNOME you will see an empty box next to to
KDE4s, click them and hit Accept…
after the install is finished and while running openSUSE, right click
the desktop and select then do NOT click on “Turn off computer” (or
any other), but rather on “Logout”
when you do that you will land on the log in screen…and, down in the
lower left you will see a “Sessions”, click on that and you will
several options one will be either KDE of Gnome (depending on what you
are running now, which will be labeled (i think) “Default”…click on
the other and then sign in and you will be in the other desktop
environment…
and, the next time you boot you will STAY in that new desktop
environment becuase it will have become default…
to switch back to the one you are running now you will have to again
go into that “Sessions” and pick the DE you want…
by the way, that Sessions is available on all log in screens…but,
if you have your system set to auto-log in you can only get to it via
the Log Out from a running system…
enjoy the freedom.

Just for the record, I did a test installation on a system with my
production laptop’s configs on it, and both KDE4 and GNOME seem to work
OK with both installed. This seems to be much better on 11.4 (I didn’t
do 11.3, so don’t know about the issue you describe).
I had also done a test installation with all the desktop environments so
I could see what was available. That also seemed to work mostly OK (one
of them, LXDE I think, was missing a couple of things and I couldn’t be
bothered to figure out why, since I was just looking around).

No, you can add others, but you have to do that through the software
selection screen. You select one when asked, and then in the
installation summary, select the software packages and install the
patterns for the others.
To answer the OP, yes, every time you login, you can select a different
DE to try them out. If you leave autologin turned on, your default will
be selected by default (and you won’t get to chose), but if you logout,
you’ll be taken to a login screen and at the bottom of the screen,
there’s a selection list that you can use to pick a different DE.
