Installing NoMachine NX do I uninstall FreeNX first?

I would like to try NoMachine ver instead of FreeNX - do I need to uninstall the distro ver of NX and FreeNX before installing NoMachine’s ver? Are they likely to cause issues if not removed?

Thank you…

Hi
Yes, uninstall before installing the ones from nomachine. Also
uninstall any client ones you have and install the version from
nomachine as well.

Thank you malcolmlewis, I found some of your other posts about NoMachine and thought that I would give it a go…

cheers

Nuts…I think I’m stuck…

I ran…
rpm -i nxclient-3.2.0-14.i386.rpm
and
rpm -i nxnode-3.2.0-13.i386.rpm

then

“planb:/data/raid/public/Incoming # rpm -i nxserver-3.2.0-16.i386.rpm
package nxserver-3.2.0-16 is already installed”

So I enter…

"planb:/home/stephen # rpm -e nxserver
NX> 702 Pre-uninstalling: server at: Wed Nov 19 20:55:49 2008.
NX> 702 Shutting down.
NX> 595 ERROR: Initialization failed: Can’t open file: /usr/NX/etc/server.cfg.
NX> 595 ERROR: No such file or directory. Please try to fix the problem by
NX> 595 ERROR: running /usr/NX/scripts/setup/nxserver --install.
NX> 702 ERROR: Cannot shutdown nxserver.

NX> 702 Uninstalling: server at: Wed Nov 19 20:55:51 2008.
NX> 702 Autodetected system: suse.
NX> 702 Uninstall log is: /usr/NX/var/log/uninstall."

If I run as suggested

/usr/NX/scripts/setup/nxserver --install

I get…
“bash: /usr/NX/scripts/setup/nxserver: No such file or directory”

So I am stuck in the middle, I can’t install or uninstall

So how to force uninstall?

Thanks

Hi
Just force it via;

sudo rpm -Uhv nxserver-3.2.0-16.i386.rpm --force

Well I ran the code…

planb:/data/raid/public/Incoming # rpm -Uhv nxserver-3.2.0-16.i386.rpm --force

I then ran

/usr/NX/scripts/setup/nxserver --install

and then ran…

planb:/data/raid/public/Incoming # rpm -Uhv nxserver-3.2.0-16.i386.rpm --force
Preparing… ########################################### [100%]

NX> 701 Bye.

Now I will re install the server and see how it goes

Thanks

I should have said instead of re installing the server - to start the server…

I thought that I could get the server status by entering

planb:/data/raid/public/Incoming # nxserver --status
bash: nxserver: command not found

(I am running in a terminal as root doing this BTW)

Thanks

Hi
Have you installed the client, then node, then server? I would look at
re-running using the command I provided in that order. Else use the -e
option to remove and make sure you delete the /usr/NX directory as well
and then start again.

Got it…
Thank you

Do you know how or why the font size is so small in the NX window?
When I VNC the font size is more like I would expect

NoMachine client is configured for 1024x768 - defaut NX fonts are 10, MS S and fixed 10, Cou

and the opensuse desktop is at 10 & bestshape (Gnome)

Thank you for your help

Hi
If your on a windows client, you may need these fonts (see the note at
the end)?
http://www.nomachine.com/download-client-windows.php

or you need to install some extra x-11 fonts? I have no issues font
wise on any of the machines I connect to, except the are all gnome
desktops.

I saw that but was unsure about their use, as I am not running old apps - the desktop fonts are tiny so I would think that this isn’t app related. More stuff to look into I guess.

Thank you for your help.
