Installing kernel source for 11.2?

Folks,

I’m not a Linux noob, but have always used Mandriva up until now. I am trying to get some very specialist software going that is only supported on Suse and Red Hat, so am going to give Suse a go for this project.

I’m trying to install NI-VISA which will allow me to communicate with various electronics equipment over USB. I need to use 11.2 as it’s the most recent version of Suse that is fully supported.

I have sussed that YAST is my rpm manager and installed gcc. However, I need to install the kernel source. uname -a tells me that 2.6.31.5-0.1-desktop is my kernel version, but when I search for kernel in YAST it’s not giving me the option to install this particular version of source files.

With Mandriva you have to install various extra sources to be able to download some packages. Do I need to do something similar here?

Also, my Internet connection is rather slow. Is this a known thing?

Many thanks.

-=welcome=- new poster…

but, i think you are running SUSE Enterprise Linux 11.2, we can learn
that for sure by you doing this

cat /etc/SuSE-release

if you are running SLE, the best place for your questions is over in
http://tinyurl.com/422mrnu, where the makers, distributors, and
supporters for the enterprise version hang out…(we are the community
not involved directly with the commercial version…kinda like we are
to SLE as Fedora is to Red Hat)

unfortunately, if you are using openSUSE 11.2 then i guess the problem
is that that version is no longer supported with full up repos…which
is why you can’t get the source…there is, however a move to extend
the life of openSUSE 11.1 over at the Evergreen corner
http://tinyurl.com/4aflkpy...maybe someday they will extend to 11.2, but
i doubt it…

lets see what the cat says…and, then go from there.

Hi
11.2 is in the ‘discontinued’ area on some mirrors;
Your rpm is available here if you add as a repository;
http://ftp5.gwdg.de/pub/opensuse/discontinued/distribution/11.2/repo/oss/

You might also wish to add;
http://ftp5.gwdg.de/pub/opensuse/discontinued/distribution/11.2/repo/non-oss/
http://ftp5.gwdg.de/pub/opensuse/discontinued/update/11.2/

Cheers Malcolm °¿° (Linux Counter #276890)
openSUSE 11.4 (x86_64) Kernel 2.6.37.6-0.7-desktop
up 1 day 3:43, 5 users, load average: 0.45, 0.37, 0.28
GPU GeForce 8600 GTS Silent - Driver Version: 280.13

Chaps,

Many thanks for the reply. I am absolutely one hundred percent definitely using open Suse and not the enterprise edition. /etc/SuSE-release confirms that.

I [think] I have added the repositories you suggested, Malcolm, but this seems to make no difference. I launched yast, went to software repositories, clicked add, selected “specify URL” clicked next and put the URLs you lised above. When I go back to software management within yast and seacrh for source, I still don’t see 2.6.31.5-0.1-desktop. I take it that isn’t anything that is shipped with this installation DVD? It seems logical that the available source would be the one for the installed kernel.

Thanks again,

Rob

Point is, that 11.2 has reached the end of it’s lifetime. If I were you I’d install openSUSE 11.4, to avoid running in to missing packages etc. etc.

I can’t do that, because National Instruments’ software only works up to 11.2. :frowning:

that sounds like a problem you need to take up with National Instruments
(perhaps before buying their goods)…

you might ask them why they produce commercial products that only
support short lived distros with a shelf life of only 18 months!! (from
12 Nov 09 to 12 May 11; see,
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:Timeline_openSUSE)

i guess the NI software works with SUSE Linux Enterprise 11, which has
a life to 2016, at least??

so, maybe you just need to switch to the supported OS…or, you might
try running in 11.4, might work fine…i do not know…(and, if you ask
NI, they might say give it a try [and then change their written
documentation when they learn 11.4 is ok…but, 11.4 ages out 15 Sep
2012, so . . . ]

Hi DiBosco

You can download the required rpm’s (including dependencies) from the repositories as indicated by malcolmlewis to a local directory and then - with yast - add this directory as a “RPM only” source in yast. Make it to refresh and you should be able to install from it. This worked well for me with 11.2.

Despite of your internet connection being “rather slow” (whatever this is) you may consider to get the whole standard 11.2 repos as long as they exist on gwdg.de. This would enable you to to maintain the system for some more time. Also watch out for the Evergreen project. Adding 11.2 is planned.

Hmmm, it’s either play this game with what NI support or use Windows. I really don’t want to use Windows, both from the point of view of it being a horrible OS and becaue of not wanting to get involved with Microsoft. If I understand correctly Enterprise SuSE is tied in with them as well. I would rather go down the Red Hat route than that.

The problem is NI engineers have the usual battle with management supporting Linux, so they don’t put as much resource in as they do to the Windows version and we all know how fast Linux changes. I believe USB has changed quite a bit in the last few kernel releases and that impacts on this because the NI installation is a proprietay piece of software that they haven’t changed to keep up with the latter changes. It’s the same old **** we end up against with the likes of nvidia. So, this is why I am stuck with needing to use 11.2 I am not buying any product from NI other than some libraries to allow my computer to “talk” to an oscilloscope. Of course, the Oscilloscope manufacturers provide lovely libraries…that work on Windows and nothing else.

Frankly, it doesn’t matter a hoot whether it is outdated. It’s never going on-line, it’s a piece of specialised test equipment that will be connected to a Linux server running mysql. I’m not in the slightest bit worried about updates, security attacks etc.

Thanks for the help though, it is much appreciated.

ok, lets see what you have enabled as repos, please show us the output
of entering the following into a terminal

zypper lr -d

and copy/paste the output back to this thread using the instructions
here: http://goo.gl/i3wnr

by the way, i’m gonna be disappointed if i see you were pointed to
Evergreen page yesterday (where you can have full access to all the 11.2
repos) and you blew it off…

I did look at Evergreen and did try adding the repos, but most of them just said something along the lines of “Can’t create entry such and such”. As it said that 11.2 wass just ramping up and I think someone else said it wasn’t going to be supported I assumed that was the reason.

I should maybe add that downloaded and installed an rpm from pbone.net which seemed to be right, but get this error now.

i saw something about that since i answered you last…
perhaps the Evergreen folks have not yet got the 11.2 repos back on
line…yet…

i see your options as:

  1. wait for 11.2 Evergreen to become available

  2. install 11.1, update to Evergreen and install your 3rd party software
(which you said “only works up to 11.2” so, it should sing a song on
    11.1, right?)

  3. purchase SLES

  4. purchase Red Hat

  5. use CentOS

  6. purchase Windows

its your move

[actually, i really wouldn’t be surprised to find out that the National
Instruments’ software will “just work” with 11.4, why not boot from an
11.4 Live CD, load in the NI software and see what happens…]
