Installing Cinnamon in Leap 15.0

Hello everyone; I am running on my Dell laptop Windows 10, dual booting with openSuse leap 15.0. In the Add-Remove software is the Cinnamon desktop. I downloaded the files checked, but the computer did not give me an option to boot into Cinnamon. In all settings I found “run a program”. I clicked on it, a screen came up, I typed “Cinnamon” hit the enter key, and nothing happened.

What may I do to have the cinnamon desktop engaged and running?

thank you,
David

If installed it should be an option on the login screen. Note it is not an option in the desktop menus only from the login. If you have auto login set you may have never noticed. Log out then choose the desktop to use.

Goglethorp;
I wish it was that easy. I am using XFCE, upon shutting down, and going through the "additional options, Cinnamon does not start. I looked in settings, and settings and startup. cinnamon files that were not checked. I checked them, restarted the computer at least 5 times going through the “additional options”, to no avail. do we have other options?
Thank you,
David

It looks like I have duplicated the reply. I apologize

Looks like there is no real solution, so I’ll call this case closed. Thanks to all of you who have read this.

Sounds to me you don’t know how to disable auto-login, you need to ask how to do things you don’t know or search these Forums for the answer (The procedure has been described a number of times).

Open YaST, then the “/edit/sysconfig Editor/” module.
Drill down
Desktop > Display Manager > DISPLAYmANAGER_AUTOLOGIN.
Currently, you should see the username of the account configured for autologin, clear the field so that it’s empty and click the “OK” button.
Continue clicking OK until you have exited YaST completely.

Now you can either logout or reboot,
When you see the screen where you enter your Username and Password, somewhere there will be a gear or other icon which contains the selection settings for your Desktop(exact icon, location and menu will depend on your running DM), and then you should be able to select Cinnamon.

I think the way you installed Cinnamon might have missed most of the required packages, the proper way is to go to YaST software and under the ‘groups’ install Cinnamon DE group. This should install the DE, dm and other bits necessary.

Thank you one and all for reading and replying to my questions. I apologize for being so tardy on this. Mr. Tsu, I am now downloading 15.0 Tumbleweed, and will be following your explicit directions for getting Cinnamon DE. I will post my results when completed.
Thank you all!
David

Ooops. Tumbleweed is still 42.3… My mistake, I should have investigated a little further on the version!

David

Current Tumbleweed is 20190512, but that could change any minute, even before you could see this. 42.3 is the previous Leap release, due for support termination shortly after 15.1 release is announced, which is expected before this month is over.

Ladies and Gentlemen;
I was not able to get the Cinnamon DE to work using the xfce. (after installing cinnamon, I still did not have a choice of choosing that DE). I reinstalled opensuse and choosing gnome. I went into the Software management and installed Cinnamon. I now have openSUSE 15 cinnamon DE!!! Hooray!!!I am pleased to say this case is successfully closed. And I went back to to the proper place to automatically sign in!

Thank you all!!!
