Good day! I have just installed SUSE 11.2, but although my ip3000 shows in the hardware, I cannot get a correct print out on A4 paper and I am informed that no driver is available. There must be a work-around for this? I am a complete newby to this OS!

I moved this thread (as it was posted in the wrong area) to this “Hardware” area in the hope that this user will find better support here for their Canon Pixma ip3000 on openSUSE-11.2.
Have some (horrible) experience with Canon on linux. Searched, no support. It may work with the driver for another Canon, but that’s trial and error. There’s also a closed source solution that does work, but I will not post a link to it, due to it’s closed source nature. Send me a PM and I’ll post you a link.
This link Canon Europe - PIXMA Linux Support Page shows the availability of Canon’s own Linux drivers. The ip3000, unfortunately, does not get a jersey. Maybe one of the other printers listed is similar and the drivers can still be used
it is traditional in linux to “slag off” canon; to their defence, they now appear to offer linux drivers for each new release;
they have not gone back and offered drivers for older printers; someone may well wish to “slag them off” for that;
On the Canon asia website; if one searches;
there is a linux driver for the ip3300;
and
there is a linux driver for the ip3500;
I would suspect either would well drive the ip3000; which is now six years old …
and as with the Brother printers, they offer TWO files for each printer:
one must install the Common Package first;
and then the printer specific package second;
and they offer the packages in two flavours: rpm and deb as well as a source file; … what an unreasonable and unhelpful group of people they are … !!
if you run a 64bit linux, you need to make a symbolic link to the 64 bit libraries; (if you run 32bit linux you will be fine)
so to install I would suggest:
- go to the link above
- download the common package as rpm first
- right-click on downloaded rpm and select the “install with package manager”; thus YaST remembers it is there I think
4)ensure YaST is closed - download printer specific rpm file
- right-click as above
another alternative is to go to turboprint
ZEDOnet | TurboPrint Linux | Printer driver for Linux
the full version costs about the price of a couple of linux magazines; it has driven our ip5000 for several years now; it is works very well; it is also traditional to grizzle to have to pay a small sum for this excellent package; so feel free to grizzle
I’ve wondered why the older Canon printers (not really THAT old) have been over looked. Interesting, pdc_2, as that somewhat answers my question.
I do like the iP3000 I have. It’s fast, and doesn’t take up much room on my desk. Plus, I can buy generic ink cartridges for it, or the brand name, so I have a choice.
As for what driver I use, in foomatic-gui, I select the Canon model BJC -7004, which shows the bjc800 driver, (select it) and that works fine for me. I normally print black and white documents.
Cheers!
thanks for this; glad your printer works well for you
