Installing Canon Pixma ip2200

Installing Canon Pixma ip2200

What is the best procedure for installing the above printer on a new installation.

YAST cannot find the driver?

I am using Suse 11.1 and desktop KDE3.5
OS: Linux 2.6.18.8-0.13-default x86_64
Current user: brian@linux-p4d
System: openSUSE 10.2 (X86-64)
KDE: 3.5.5 “release 45.10”

Thanks

According to here: OpenPrinting database - Printer: Canon iP 2200

You might as well Bin it!

See what others think.

Caf’s probably right onthis. In any case, I found this

Canon Print Filter for Linux

but no promises that it will work.

You could try google translate with this French thread:

Forum Ubuntu-fr.org / [howto] Installer une imprimante Canon Pixma IP1600

Last resort, (if you don’t mind paying for drivers), is TurboPrint.

signetone;

I think this is more encouraging than the link Caf gave you:

are you using 32bit or 64 bit linux?

PV has pointed folks to Canon Europe;

their Asia site also has the drivers;

Seems to me every new device from Canon now has LINUX drivers;

so let’s say THANKS VERY MUCH to them; WE APPRECIATE WHAT YOU ARE DOING, CANON;

the link below should point directly to LINUX drivers made by Canon

Canon

OpenSuse uses the rpm format;

so click on that rpm cpmmon package link;

doing that should prompt to ask if you want to install so say yes;

post back to the forum for further help

Hi

Thanks for the reply 64 bit

OS: Linux 2.6.27.29-0.1-default x86_64
System: openSUSE 11.1 (x86_64)
KDE: 3.5.10 “release 21.11”

Would it be ok to continue…

The links do seem to assume 32bit

BTW I am a newbie - so simple please.

Thanks

Hi

Thanks for the reply 64 bit

OS: Linux 2.6.27.29-0.1-default x86_64
System: openSUSE 11.1 (x86_64)
KDE: 3.5.10 “release 21.11”

Would it be ok to continue…

The links do seem to assume 32bit

The OpenPrinting Canon-PIXMA_iP2200 page suggests

Driver is not fully GPL and therefore not expected to work in non-32bit PC systems, like AMD64, or Intel ET64, or PPC (e.g. Linux on Apple) systems.

However, I’m not sure on this, but in general, many 32 bit CUPS drivers work ok with 64 bit systems, so long as a link like this is made

ln -s /usr/lib/cups/filter/pstocanonij /usr/lib64/cups/filter

*Note the name of your driver may differ.

Others please correct me if I’m wrong on this.

should be fine;

you should just need to create a link after you have installed the driver: i think you will have two packages so install a common one first and then an ip2200 package after;

the link; PV recommended this

The pstocanonij is in /usr/lib/cups/filter; CUPS is looking for it in /usr/lib64/cups/filter.

You just need to add a link as follows:

Code:

ln -s /usr/lib/cups/filter/pstocanonij /usr/lib64/cups/filter

so if you open a terminal after install and run the above;

let us know how it goes

Canon ip1880 and Opensuse 11 - Page 2 - openSUSE Forums

this thread gives further reading if you want it but hopefully things will just work for you

Hi

Thanks for the reply.

The rpm will not install - I was trying to use Kpackage?

cnijfilter-common-2.60-3.i386.rpm

Any ideas?

Thanks

signetone;

  1. Down load the rpm into some directory.
  2. Open a terminal window an enter:

su
cd <path to directory with the rpm>
rpm -Uvh cnijfilter-common-2.60-3.i386.rpm

For information on the above parameters and usage of the rpm command see:
man rpm

Good Luck.

Hi

I get this

linux-z3dx:/home/brian/Desktop/Canon ip2200 # rpm -Uvh cnijfilter-common-2.60-3.i386.rpm
error: Failed dependencies:
gtk+ is needed by cnijfilter-common-2.60-3.i386
libpopt.so.0 is needed by cnijfilter-common-2.60-3.i386
libxml is needed by cnijfilter-common-2.60-3.i386
linux-z3dx:/home/brian/Desktop/Canon ip2200 #

it failed also by using the kpackage

Any ideas thanks

signetone;

Did you try to install the missing libraries with YaST? Choose the “Search”
filter, check the box “RPM provides” and search for the needed libraries.
The “Technical Data” tab can be used to see if the RPM you choose actually
provides the library you want.

Hi

Yes that did it - sorted.

Thanks

This particular printer should use the same driver as the ip2600 which i have on my system, download the driver from canon asia or uk and once it is finished right click the download and install using the install software menu, when finished use yast to configure the printer and look to see if it is in the printer list it should be there BUT NOT IN ORDER then click on that listing and it should work.
