Hi, I just installed openSUSE 64 bit and have it up and running. Great looking OS.

I have four questions, not sure if I should post four threads, or ask all in here. I’m familiar with the Gnome GUI, but this is my first experience with KDE. Want to learn something new.

one
I installed the benchmark bonnie, and now can not find it. I’ve looked in just about every folder and can’t seem to locate it.

two
I looked for the benchmark Hardinfo to install and the installer was unable to locate it.
How do I find it, it is not in the package manager.

three
I install the bubble monitor desktop applet and can’t figure out how to bring it up, the setting menu is in the upper right on the desktop. How do you turn on the display?

forth
Where do you set your signature in this forum? I went through the setting and couldn’t find it.

This is the forth Linux OS I’ve installed and this was the cleanest and smoothest install yet, Debian could take some lessons at least on the install app, 5 out out 5 stars on the install package.

So far I’ve been able to configure everything the way I want with the exceptions above. Below is my system info just in case that matters.

Any help on the above issues would be appreciated.

Ive never used this tool myself, however a quick google suggests this is a command line tool. There is some info here:

It looks like you can get this package from a repo on the Opensuse Build service. (http://www.phoronix-test-suite.com/) Its a pretty powerful benchmarking tool for linux with lots of different tests you can run. Im pretty sure its in the main opensuse repo. If not, its definately on the build service.

generally considered (here) to be best to ask one question per thread,
and then put the topic in the subject line…that way the person(s)
interested in that part of openSUSE will see the topic an open your
post…otherwise, if have a subject like “Help please” no one may ever
look at it…

did you install it with yast, zypper, the rpm command, or what?
if you installed it with YaST it will normally add it to your menu,
along with its icon if it is a GUI application…is it?

hmmmmmm…i’d never heard of it before so googled it, i kinda doubt it
is what you expected…but, maybe…well, see here:

looks like a command line program to me…which mean you can probably
learn how to use it by opening a terminal and entering this command:


man bonnie

and/or


info bonnie

or search for the fuller info (if any) on your drive with locate, or
manually with a file browser…look in /usr/share/doc and/or
/usr/share/doc/packages

heh, one of the common mistakes is to “go crazy” installing stuff just
because it is free…i mean, what kind of benchmarking do you need to
do? comparative analysis of the through put of your RAID, or what?

to fill in your sig try this while logged in:

click on “Settings” near the top, right above where it says “Welcome
sleven”…then, on the left, under “My Settings” click on “Edit
Signature” and have a blast

there is a limit to how big it can be…

This will be more about the customs here then about your questions.

First, welcome here. We hope you will find it a frindly and usefukk place.

Second, you ask if you should make threads for each question/problem you have. In general, yes. Were it alone for the fact that you can then make a meaningfull titles to your thread that will appeal to people who know something about your subject. And the change you get help will be greater then. Also the answer to your questions are then not one great mix of several dicussions, something that may make it difficult later for people who come to this thread to understand it.

Third, you provided a lot of information about your sytem, but I did not see the oprmSUSE level you installed (except that it is a 64-bit one), I assume 11.3.

Sorry about the multiple post, will start separate threads next time.

I installed 11.3, forgot to put that in.

I’ve only been using the Linux OSes for the last six months. Trying to learn as much about the different distro as I can. In all the others I’ve used the Gnome GUI, so I decided to try KDE to see what it was all about.

I installed Bonnie using YaST2 >view>RPM Groups in benchmarks under system. No particular reason for picking Bonnie other than it was first on the list and I wanted to see how the installer worked. Learned not all packages install and icon on the menu.

The link for the HardInfo repository didn’t work. Went looking for another repo and found a warning about not installing HardInfo, so it worked out great. Learned how to add a repo and didn’t manage to install something I shouldn’t have to start with. Your explanation on how to add the repo was perfect, just happened to be a link that didn’t work.

The desktop bubble applet I found as an icon in the menu, what I have called the system monitor for a while. I’ll play with the applet installer and figure out how to use it.

I’ve followed your instruction on editing the signature line but don’t know what I’m not doing right. Here is what I see:

I don’t see the edit signature, I’ve open every link and still can’t find it.

I’m having fun learning the system no matter what problems I run into. I’m convinced that I learn more about the system every time I screw something up, which is often. I’ve managed to over write my MBR twice now, but recovered. I’m learning slowly, but I am learning.

I couldn’t edit my signature until I have posted more than 50 posts or something like that or maybe it was caused by something else. I’m not sure. I know that initially I couldn’t edit my signature. Anyway I think You’re looking in exactly the right place and it’s not there. Here’s how it looks for me at the moment
