I want to try out awesome window manager. I installed “awesome2” package from the repository given on their site, but it is still not in the list of available WMs at login. How do I put it there? That list doesn’t seem to be in sysconfig. I’m a bit worried about making awesome default, in case it didn’t install properly and would crash. I’m using SUSE 12.1 and gdm, if that’s important…

Thanks, that’s good to know. Though if I had the same problem with a less broken wm, what could I do about it?
Also, I’ve tried another alternative - xmonad, and have another problem (I feel like I shouldn’t be creating a new thread abut that). I installed xmonad-0.10-7.1.x86_64 from Index of /repositories/home:/hgraeber:/haskell/openSUSE_12.1. Now there is “xmonad” in the wm list, however, if I select it, console is shown for a brief moment and then gdm starts again. Could you suggest a way to, at least, see what the problem is?

I don’t think I’d be experimenting on a production machine. I usually just do a sandbox installation to mess about
with. Figure out what works and doesn’t and go from there.
But your choice of WM isn’t one that seems to be getting much attention.
