I installed openSUSE 11.2 (i586) on desktop standalone (Linux only no Windows)… But it won’t boot unless the CD is in the drive… I used a network install ISO… downloaded files from Internet… took several hours so I don’t feel like reformatting and reinstalling… any advice on how I can get it to ignore the CD and boot from the HDD… my Bios is set for HDD first… it tries it but can’t find any system files so it loads from the CD… and I select boot from Hard disk and it loads SUSE…
Boot your suse and reinstall the bootloader using yast.
I tried the YAST… I tried different variations but it all comes back to the same thing… is there a specific way to reinstall the boot loader?
Where is GRUB installed now? (root, MBR, extended,…)
What does sudo /sbin/fdisk -l tell?
Disk /dev/sda: 40.0 GB, 40020664320 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 4865 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x3cb83cb7
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sda1 * 1 654 5253223+ 83 Linux
/dev/sda2 655 1437 6289447+ 82 Linux swap / Solaris
/dev/sda3 1438 4865 27535410 83 Linux
So you should put GRUB either into MBR or into root-partition with setting a generic MBR. Both can be done with yast.
and how do I do that if you can explain thank you…
Go to yast → bootloader and set to install GRUB into MBR
That should do it.

There is no one way. There are several. Yast is very common. Read the
stuff you can find with ‘man grub’.
I think it might have been because I didn’t have a boot partition… (/boot)… moot point now as I’ve decided to redo the system… (/boot=100MB, / =30GB, swap=2GB)… see if it works when we reinstall… thanks for you assistance…
That should not matter if you only have one OS running.
Reinstalled SUSE Linux… drive still won’t boot by itself… guess something is wrong with my system… will suffer with the CD issue until I can replace the computer… I think its just old… whole post, boot, detection of devices is very slow…

I had the same problems with the OpenSuse 11.1 LiveCD, it only install
the LiveCD to the HDD. Even installed as LiveCD on the HD you’ll find
lots of programs and components missing.
You need to use download OpenSuSe install DVDs or even better use the
Network install.
http://en.opensuse.org/Network_Install
This way it installs without dl/ the DVD although a DVD is very handy
when you need to fix something or as a backup.
Bottom line the LiveCD only installs the LiveCD not a complete OpenSuse
system.
It should have installed grub to boot unless the CD was damaged maybe.
That would explain a lot… I had also used the Network install first and after downloading the files after several hours it had the original problem… Then I downloaded the CD for KDE and still have the problem… I am downloading the DVD… just that it takes 15 hours… should be finished by now… I’ll install it and let you all know… Thank you…
check the media before installing. Install grub to the MBR. That should be the default though. You might also want to run a low level check on the drive. Maybe it has a damaged MBR track. You can get a scanner from your drive manufacturer
