Hi,
First let’s figure out a couple of things; are you using KDE or GNOME?
If you are using KDE, under the SUSE button (bottom left corner) -> Configure Desktop -> Multimedia -> Audio and Video Settings you can find different devices and their preference - you should make sure the Analog devices are at the top of the lists if your machine has HDMI Output as it might be trying to play the audio there.
Hi Miuku and thanks for posting. I tried with KDE but had no sound so installed again and selected “GNOME”. My problem is intrying to get sound in Firefox.I can get sound using the Yast sound test tune and can get a voice testing the right and left speakers by typing into terminal.I think this means sound card and driver are ok?My codec is apparrently0xfe028000 .
Unfortunately I’m not very familiar with the workings of GNOME but I would assume that in the Sound settings you have multiple outputs and for some reason Firefox is using the wrong one (if you have for example Analog, HDMI, etc).
Perhaps someone who is more familiar with the inner workings of GNOME can give a hand.
PulseAudio might come in to play here. (You may need to install the ‘pavucontrol’ package first, then run from a terminal with a command of the same name.)
Simple test:
aplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/test.wav
*This will play a test sound through ALSA. If that can be heard move on to checking PA (layer above ALSA)
2.Run
paplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/test.wav
Do you here sound? If not, you have a PulseAudio configuration issue to sort out.
In Yast try setting different device in different order. I just installed a new MB and I had to chnage the order of the devices
Try turning off pulse bottom right in the yast screen
Generic comment.— you don’t have to reinstall. In Linux that is not how things get fixed usually. If you want to try
Gnome just install the pattern in Yast-software management.
In any case it depends on your hardware what sound chip??
Hi Deano,
Thanks for responding.
Tried both 1 and 2 got text but no sound with either .Did get sound with previous tests,Yast sound test and left /right speaker check.
Okay. Have you checked the default output, or profile yet? I find ‘pavucontrol’ is a useful graphical tool for checking/configuring this.
Hi again ,
How do I get “pavucontrol”? Is it something I’d find in software manager?
Yes, since you know how to use a terminal you can just type; sudo zypper in pavucontrol
After installing it you can run it from a terminal with pavucontrol or press alt+f2 and type pavucontrol into the box that appears (it’s like a quick launcher)
Thanks very much .I’ll try that when I get home.
Hi,
I have run a test again by typing “speaker-test -Dplug:front -c2 -l5 -twav” into the terminal. I get a nice lady saying “left front” from my left speaker and "right front "from my right speaker which is good but I still get no sound in firefox .Can anyone help?
Have now got sound (configured using pavucontrol) THANKYOU SO MUCH Miuki and Deano and all who offered help.
Great forum experience .Thanks again!
You might want to try veromix it is a pulse volume control widget that live on your panel. more conviniet to use then pavucontrol to adjust sound for each app
Glad to have been of help.
Nice tip. I must admit, my sound generally just works, so the only time I’ve had to fire up pavucontrol was to assist others having problems.
It is neat because you can adjust each app’s sound level. You can also with with pavucontrol of course but it is easier if the control is on the panel.
If you are ever using KDE, you can do everything that you do in pavucontrol with KMix (which is installed by default).
