Installed hpc computing packages -- can they be removed

I have seen that packages designated with “hpc” – high performance computing, are used for computer clusters and major research computing environments. It does appear that there are non “hpc” similarly labeled packages. I do scientific computing and compile much of my software but on a moderate-to-high level pc (intel i7). Nothing extraordinary by today’s standards.
Over the years though I have gotten dozens of hpc packages installed. I don’t remember the circumstances.

I don’t know if I am really using any “hpc” packages. Could I remove these hpc packages just to recover the disk space? Is there any reason to keep these?

Of course, I will look at what might be removed along with the “hpc” package.

Thanks for any insights. tom kosvic

If you’re not using them, sure.

You can always start to remove them, and if they start removing things you need, just say ‘no’ to the prompt to continue.

HPC packages are useful for creating and testing programs for distributed computing.
