Installation screws up when probing the graphics card

Hi.

Have tried to install openSUSE 11.1 x64 twice now, but it seems to fail.

When the installation is done, openSUSE wants to probe my graphics card - which only results in my monitor going in and out of sleep mode over and over again. So eventually I have to force a shutdown.

The system is now unable to boot, it just stops with a black screen.

Tried running the repair tool on the installation DVD, this fixes some Ext3 filesystem problems, some packages (I think) as well as the bootloader. The bootloader repair however won’t detect my Windows installations this time, so they’re gone.

Anyways, after that, the system still stops with a black screen during the boot. I had the Windows 7 DVD fix my bootloader, so I can boot into any of my Windows installations again.

So, how can I install openSUSE 11.1 successfully?

Some system specs:
Asus P5Q-E
Intel C2Q Q9550
Corsair 4GB (I think I saw openSUSE say I had 3.7 or 3.8 GB RAM - why is that?)
AMD/ATI HD 4870 (512 MB)

For the record, I’m pretty new to Linux/openSUSE.

Thanks.

Third time’s the charm. By choosing automatic configuration the screen only went in and out of sleep mode a couple of times, before I could continue.

For the record, first and second time I chose manual configuration, and I tried waiting for 20 minutes with no luck.

Thanks.
