i ran my install it gave me everything as working till after yast2 does the autoconfig and asks me for my tv cards. It was meant to boot into the gui and finish the setup and i get a error saying “fatal server error: no screens detected”
So i went looking for some help on google and found one page with the same problem i am having. http://portal.suse.cz/node/871 this is the problem. except i only got 2 of the errors on that log. i am using the openSUSE 11.x for x64.
Check here;
HCL/TV Cards - openSUSE
do you think it is the tv card causing the problem ?
When i get home from work i wont install the card. During yast autoinstall it did prompt me for drivers for the tv card which i did.if that step does not work ill just take the tv card out and try a fresh install and see what gives.
i think the problem i am having is related to a problem with the disc i used to install. i am surprised that in the 2-3 weeks i had this post up that no one replied with the same problem. well if anyone can assist i would appreciate
> i think the problem i am having is related to a problem with the disc i

did you check the media before you installed?

i’d suggest that a more descriptive subject might attract more of the
RIGHT folks to look at your problem…
like maybe: TV card setup gets “fatal server error: no screens detected”
see, your current “install problem” may, or may NOT attract folks
with actual TV card experience…
THEN, in your first post give:
brand/model TV card
brand/model video card
cpu brand/ etc etc
using KDE3.?? KDE 4.?? Gnome,
using SUSE 10.?? 11.0?
laptop? brand
in one of your posts you say: “During yast
autoinstall it did prompt me for drivers for the tv card which i
did.” what does that mean? did you get some drivers from a CD/DVD
that came with the TV card and, what? make them available to YaST?
were they linux drivers?
did YaST correctly identify the TV card by brand/model and NOT find a
driver for it??
is the TV card you have known to be compatible with SUSE and/or
Linux? see http://en.opensuse.org/HCL/TV_Cards
> well if anyone can assist i would appreciate
you are welcome, and good luck…

DenverD (Linux Counter 282315) via NNTP, Thunderbird 2.0.0.14, KDE
3.5.7, SUSE Linux 10.3, 2.6.22.18-0.2-default #1 SMP i686 athlon
ok a brief rundown of what ive found so far.
1st its not the tv card from what ive found. when i looked at the Xorg.conf and the init.pl i saw it did not load my monitor and graphic cards.
OpenSuse 11.0
SLI mode 2x Gigabyte 8500GT graphic cards
Opteron 146 CPU
the tv card is the Global Tv card by gigabyte as well. From what i have found it doesnt even reach the stage of the tv card driver install it stops after it cannot find the graphic card drivers.
i added a HTTP: download.nvidia.com
Dir on server: /opensuse/11.0
it could not find the drivers after i added the repository files and got the file listing off nvidia i used yast --install and went to the repository and saw a list of drivers and tried to install one at a time making sure that the one i selected before moving to next one was de-selected. I got a error saying this
Nothing provides kernel (default:vmlinux) =c5a534f24fd188bdby nvidia-gfxG01…
and it would not let me load the driver.
So i dont know what to do now.
any ideas on getting the graphics cards installed ?
BTW i am using KDE 4.0

we may have to install from command line in level 3
ok that looks like a better solution, but how do i access that url in X i dont have any kind of GUI to boot into yet … so i add it as a URL repository ? reason i ask is the machine is at home and i am reading this at work
In CLI
using zypper
here is all you need to know about using zypper from CLI
Zypper/Usage/11.0 - openSUSE
first type this:
zypper lr
and tell us what repos are listed
this is a totally noob question how do i copy whats on my screen in terminal mode ? i am not getting any GUI activity at all i cant load Sax2 -r it gives a error on line 653 and dies. when i add the URL on the 1st install under “new NVIDIA cards” in yast i add the repo as a url. it downloads packages and after it downloads all the packages it gives a error saying “there was a problem with package installation…” i enter on OK and it trys to do it again and gos in a cycle i had to hard reset. i am now going to try the other url. “nvidia legacy cards”
try this to get vesa display and have a gui
type 3 in the boot line at the green boot screen to get runlevel 3 - login as root
type
sax2 -r -m 0=vesa
reboot
this should enable a display using vesa
ok i had to come back in here after this. Firstly i dunno what i may have done wrong but it took me like a whole day just to get all those files after i followed the Nvia readme for add a repo
zypper sa install ftp://download.nvidia.com/opensuse/11.0 nvidia
that part and it downloaded files i rebooted and got the same error …

so i figured something is up and checked my hardware in yast2 and saw that in the list of hardware my graphics are installed. then i went to the yast --install and checked the drivers and they both had a i next to them obviously im assuming it means installed and + is to install. so i tried sax2 -r and at line 653 i got a error and i dont know how to go to that line being a nooby. but i went and tried a startx and got that same error as usuall and decided to take a look at my xorg.conf and it hasnt installed anything since i got the original first error and i tried doing a install and now everything is big like a runlevel 1 in 800x600 i noticed after my repair at the stage just after you install/repair the boot loader my windows was missing so i had to run a second repair after that to add windows and i got it by fluke that i added a chain loader and selected the drive i saw that had the ntfs file system. so thats how i got in windows to write this after having had 4 hours sleep in last 4 nights trying to fix after work so its getting frustrating here is log of my xorg.conf file

what you think i should do there i have a philips 109B7 19" flatscreen and i have no idea what to do there
i tried using this command in X
sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
but i get a error saying invalid command though sudo package is installed and i can run comands of sudo i tried “man sudo” and got the command strings and found nothing with
“dpkg” though i will try “sudo X -configure” when i get home and see what it does. … i think i just need to get linux to automatically configure xorg.conf
any ideas if this fails ? (at work at the moment)
Just try installing the nvidia driver form level 3 CLI
download the driver and save it to your /home/*username
boot to level 3
login as root
cd /home/*username
sh NVIDIA{tab}
select yes to everything in the installer, you may have to tab thru to yes on some
what exactly would the "driver name* be ?
i tried this command and now i have a HUGE ass long xorg.0.log
its giving me problems with fonts
