I am new to Linux. I had tried Ubuntu & Mandriva. but not satisfy with them. Then i heard Opensuse through my friend.
I download OpenSuse 11 KDE version. and create a live CD.
When I boot through Live CD my screen blinks 2-3 times and graphic screen with X (cross mark mouse ) displayed. then return to text mode and continuing…
After showing Starting Service Networkmanager… it display
Starting service kdm… then screen goes blank…
after 2-3 second my monitor light blinks…
I wait for 15-20 minutes. there is not effect. but num lock is working…
My monitor is CRT (Samsung Samtron 45Bn). Ubuntu and Mandriva was successfully dected.
I tried VESA mode also. but same problem.
I request you to please advice me what to do…
As @caf4926 states, the DVD is better for installation. By the way, the VESA option on the menu applies to the graphics during boot, it is not used when the X server is setup later for the user gui. It looks like the default open-source driver for X is not working with your video device. However, you may still be able to get the LiveCD working . . .
On the LiveCD boot menu, type the number “3” (without quotes) in the Boot Options. That will boot you to a command line prompt. Login as “root”. Then do:
sax2 -r -m 0=vesa
A program will run and you will probably see a thin white border around the black monitor screen, and then a small box asking if you want to save or change. Select change, and the sax2 gui will (hopefully) run, using the vesa X driver. You can probably change the resolution to 1024x768, perhaps no more. Check the monitor configuration that it is correct for size. Then save. The program will close and you will be back at the command line. Then do:
startx
And the gui may start up. If you choose to install from there, you will probably get the vesa driver used for X. Post back here what your graphics device is, and we can point you to how you can change from vesa to a driver native for your device.
I tried Sax2 -r -m 0=vesa.
but it shows no X server running…
My PC configuration Intel Pentium 4 3GHz
Display : Intel(R) 82865G Graphic Controller
Memory : 256 MB DDR
HDD : 80 GB SATA
Monitor : Samsung Samtron 45Bn
I tried Mandriva & Ubuntu also. It work fine.
While installing Ubuntu it cause problem. Then I tried Safe Graphic mode then it works fine. After installing it works very fine.
So is there any tricky way to install OpenSuse 11
or is there any way to install in Non GUI like old linux ?
The best choice is to install with the DVD. Is that not an option?
The command is not “Sax2”, it is “sax2”. And yes, one message you will get is that the X server is not running - that is expected. But then sax will run its own server. You may get some error messages; usually not a problem. Sax will then display a thin white line monitor border; you will see black and there will be small rectangles in each corner. A dialog box will appear in the upper-left corner asking if you want to save or change the configuration. Click on change and the sax gui will start up where you can change resolution and, if necessary, the monitor dimensions.
Boot again with the number 3 in the Boot Options. Login as root. Then do this until one works:
sax2 -a
sax2 --fullscreen
sax2 -r -m 0=vesa --fullscreen
If none of that works, do this command from the prompt:
lspci
Look for the video graphics device. Usually it is called something like “vga compatible controller”. Write that down and post it back here.
I am having this exact problem even after doing an install as well. I tried the DVD after the live cd did not work. It goes through the whole install and then craps out during the startup. It goes to a login prompt and then when I enter in the commands given it will not do the startx. It just goes back to the same. I installed Debian and like the other person have not had problems with the other one’s he mentioned. I have had problems with Simply MEPIS but that was easily fixed by running the config for the xserver. Once this was done it was easy to start the OS. I did not have this problem I believe for OpenSUSE 9 or some thing like this. It was before KDE 4 was released. On the install I have tried GNOME and KDE 3.5 and both do the same thing.
May I please suggest that you open a new thread for your problem? It gets difficult handling multiple users in the same thread, and even though the problem appears generally the same, usually the causes and often the solutions are different. You will get more visibility and therefore faster/better help with your own thread; please use a title that is more descriptive. Try to provide as much detail as you can on what exactly you have done, what happened, and what hardware you have. That will save multiple posts back-and-forth, and get you a solution faster. Thanks a lot.
I will try the above commands also. If god is with me then it will work on my pc. I like Suse very much as compared to other linux distributions. My friend working on Suse since 4-5 months with no problems. He is also installed from Live CD. Anyway…
I tried sax2 --vesa -l… it shows error msg
ISaX: could not import file /var/cache/sax/files/config at /usr/sbin/isax in line 199
like msg. then starting from cache files…
I wait 3-5 min. but still shows msg… Or shall i wait more time ?
any way i will try --fullscreen option also… and come back
Once again thax for the quick support… of Suse Team.
sax2 --vesa 0:1024x768@60
then i got sax2 with white border. and made changes.
then init 5 it load suse.
I think the problem may be due to refresh rate. I tried @75 the same problem occurs. when i change to 60 work fine. any way thanks for your support.
Now when i click on Install icon. nothing happend.
what is the reason ? the mouse cursor changes to install icon for some times then goes normal. i wait 10 min. not response. I tried MyComputer also same problem.
