Hi everyone,
I had openSUSE 12.2 and I tried to upgrade to 12.3 via installation DVD, but it didn’t work: when I click on “Installation” a green bar appears on the bottom of the screen and when it reaches the end, nothing happens. So I formatted my PC, I checked the DVD, I checked the .iso, I tried with the “No KMS” option, but it always was the same: that green bar and nothing else. I also tried with the live CD, but when I click on “openSUSE live”, the Gecko screen appears, it stays there for about 20 minutes, and then there is a blank YaST screen with the YaST symbol at the top left, and the “Next”, “Previous”, “Abort” and “Help” buttons at the bottom. I left it there for a whole night, but nothing happened and there was the same screen and the mouse pointer had the loading symbol. Obviously I checked the DVD and the .iso for the live version too but nothing changed.
Does anyone have an idea?
P.S. I am on a 64bit PC. If you need other info about my PC, just ask for it
Tell us more about your PC hardware. On one PC I had to select a text mode install even though graphics worked fine after the install was complete.
Thank You,
Here’s a photo from Hardware Dectection Tool. (I was too lazy to copy it manually :P)
Tell me if you need some more specific info

Thank you
Looks like an Intel Core 2 Due. I can’t tell your graphics chipset from your post. None the less, I would try to install using the text mode.
Thank You,
I tried with the text mode, but there was no change.
About my graphics chipset, I took a photo of the VESA menu (that’s what you need, I guess…?)

Anyway, I’m not so worried about installing openSUSE 12.3, since in about a month the 13.1 version will be released; rather than that, will I encounter the same problem on the new release? And above all, what’s the problem? Installing 12.2 went just fine, that’s why my worry is not to be able to install 13.1

Try it now and find out. If you find the same problem, report in bugzilla.

I did, and it worked, or, at least, it started: I didn’t finish the installation because I’d prefer installing 13.1 when it’s released as stable. However, when I aborted the installation and gave the shutdown command the PC didn’t turn off completely: when the Gecko faded out, the black screen stayed there (the monitor and the PC power button led didn’t turn off).
Actually that’s a problem that I have already seen when I updated to 12.3 - actually before trying to clean install it, I updated the OS live, but since I had this and some other problems I chose to install 12.3 from DVD… and you know the rest XD

Try to run the live CD instead.
I like to leave an extra partition for testing the next release, and
this can be quite small. In my laptop I have a 7 GB partition for this,
it is enough. Ok, you can’t do much work on 7 GB (no home partition for
it), but it is enough to find out if it can be installed and it runs ok.

Did it, and installed openSUSE 13.1. It shutted down normally. But then it says it’s doing automatic configuration and it’s stuck at 13%. I left it for 12h with no result. On forced reboot (through power button) it asks if I want to continue configuration and it blocks again at 13%… Is this a bug due to the fact that this is a developing version? Will the stable release work? …Or I’m just doing something wrong?

I suggested running the live, not installing it (yet).

I don’t think you did anything wrong, but I’m not familiar with
installation from the live “cd”.
The “RC” means Release Candidate. It should be (almost) perfect.

You’re right, however, since it worked perfectly, I decided to install it (you yourself said that you prefer installing new versions on another partition). Besides, it couldn’t be worse than having no OS
I don’t think it’s due to the installation from live CD. Doesn’t it do automatic configuration also when you install it from DVD?
Anyway, do you have any idea for me to install this openSUSE 13.1 on my PC, with this problem?
(P.S. Thanks for your patience! )

Ah, I see.
(I loose track of all the details of every problem posted here… O:-) )

Er… I’m not sure. To clarify: when starting the install from DVD (I’m
not familiar with the install from CD), very early there is a tick box
to select automatic install. I never use this.
Do you refer to that?
There is also a phase at the end (after the first boot, IIRC), where it
does some automatic config. I think you refer to this phase?
If that is what fails, it is not crucial if it doesn’t complete. It is a
nuisance, yes, but you can configure everything from yast, thing by thing.

Welcome. Not really, no, I don’t have more ideas…
I’m myself testing 13.1, and finding issues. But none so bad as yours.

That happened to me, too (on my work computer). I had no problems installing 12.2, but a blank screen for 12.3.
So, next try, on the boot screen I hit the function key for video settings, and selected “noKMS”. After that I had a usable install screen and was able to proceed with the install.
So, yes, the installed system has crappy graphics. But 12.2 also had crappy graphics. The only difference was that the 12.2 installer could deal with it, while the 12.3 installer needed help.
Yes, that’s what i’m referring to. So I followed your advice answering “No” when prompted, but then the PC asks me for a password, but when I type the one which I wrote upon installation it says it’s incorrect. I tried everything, even logging into “root” with the same password or with no login and with no password, or in my account without password… in short, even in terminal login, I wasn’t able to access my computer.
But the thing that most worries me, is that, when I shutted down, the PC didn’t shutdown completely in the same way it didn’t with the installation DVD or in the previous upgrade.
(I’ll quote the post in which I said that so that you don’t have to re-read everything )

I tried this too, but unfortunately it didn’t work :\
