Installation - frustrating experience

I installed openSuse 11,0 from DVD with KDE 3.5.
The system works fine . I then updated the system and installed KDE 4,2 (One click from KDE site). The icons in systray vanishes and black squares appear, I tried all possible suggestions given in this forum as well as given in KDE bug list 178242.Nothing worked.
Only suggestion i could not try is this:
Remove intel driver option “MigrationHeuristic” “greedy” from xorg.conf
I could find any options like these in xorg.conf. May be I have looked at a wrong file.
Can anybody help me providing a detail instruction on ‘how to do this’?
Thanks in advance

kernel 2.6.25.20-0.1-default i686/opensuse 11.0 (i586)/kde 4.2.2 relese 112/Toshiba Satellte/core duo T7500/intel 965GM display/ram 2.0 GB

But you still have kde3 installed right. So login there.
Navigate to you /home/username and view hidden files

Rename the folder .kde4 to .kde4_old

Try logging in to kde4 again.

Thanks
As I said I have tried all these methods as they were suggested on this forum before but without any result.

give us

zypper lr

thanks
here is the output of zypper lr:

Delete everything in the repo list except the DVD but disable it.
The add back

Updates:

Oss:
Index of /distribution/11.0/repo/oss

non-Oss:
Index of /distribution/11.0/repo/non-oss

kde4.2 factory community:
Index of /repositories/KDE:/KDE4:/Community/openSUSE_11.0_KDE4_Factory_Desktop

In your current list repo 1, add it if you must, but leave out the kde community and backports which serve kde3, at least for now anyway.

Once done with that, go to Yast - Software management
Filter by repository and select kde4 factory desktop and do update all in thsi list unconditionally and the same with the kde4 factory community.

Report back

Later consider adding packman to get multi-media

Thank you very much for the promt reply. I shall let you know after carrying out what you have asked for.

and, always remember: if the frustration with KDE4 gets too high you
can always leave the bleeding edge for others to be frustrated by, and
stick with KDE3.5 which you said worked fine…

i do my work in 3.5 and every once in a (long) while take another look
at 4.x, and then go back to something that works and is stable and is
NOT frustrating…

your choice!!

Don’t know if you tried updating to Qt 4.5 - that worked for some.

a. changed repo as given below :

6 | openSUSE-DVD 11.0 | openSUSE-DVD 11.0 | No | No

b. updated all in KDE4 factory desktop and KDE4 factory community
C. rm -r .kde4
D. rebooted the system in kDE4

Systery is still empty with one black square.
I also used the following commands:

  • kquitapp plasma
  • rm ~/.kde4/share/config/plasma*
  • rm ~/.kde4/share/config/ksmserverrc
  • plasma &
Situation remains same but I get the following error message:

[1]+ Done plasma

Being new to Linux I can not make out anything. Does it give additional information.
Thanks for all suggestions and giving me time but I am eager to know why it does not work

Change all the repo’s to Yes|Yes except the DVD which is correct No|No

The do the update unconditionally again.

1 | Index of /distribution/11.0/repo/non-oss | Index of /distribution/11.0/repo/non-oss | Yes | Yes
2 | Index of /update/11.0 | Index of /update/11.0 | Yes | Yes

6 | openSUSE-DVD 11.0 | openSUSE-DVD 11.0 | No | No

  1. Updated again with following repo configuration:

    2 | Index of /update/11.0 | Index of /update/11.0 | Yes | Yes

    6 | openSUSE-DVD 11.0 | openSUSE-DVD 11.0 | No | No

  2. deleted .kde4 and rebooted
systrays are still filled with blank squares

Did you try a new .kde4 folder again?

Yes. I deleted .kde4 folder and rebooted

Try adding this repo and update all in it after adding:

Index of /repositories/KDE:/Qt45/openSUSE_11.0

It has worked !!!
All systray icons are visible.
Thank you very much for your help.
Can I ask for one more help ?
How do you configure and connect to Broad band connection from console ?

Start a new thread in the correct section. You will get better help.
