I want to try openSuse, but cannot install it. The furthest I get is language selection. After that I am told repositories cannot be found for my c.d device. That is interesting, since Ubuntu and Debian have no difficulties with any of my hardware. I do not believe it is a problem with the disc. I burned openSuse and Debian discs at the same time, so I am sure I have a clean copy.
I have read reviews in the past that say installing Suse is often difficult. I do not know if this problem is common. Other than burning another dvd and hoping for the best, does anyone have any suggestions?
It could be a corrupt download, I would re-download the iso (personally I normally use either the net install disk or a live disk) and when burning the iso try burning at a slower speed (e.g 8x instead of 16x)
Incidentally, OpenSuse isn’t a difficult install, especially with a live disk, I would say it’s simpler than debian but it’s been some years since I looked at ubuntu so I couldn’t give a comparison there
Something to consider when choosing what kind of disk to use, with a dvd your download is six times the size of say a live cd, contains a whole lot more packages an awful lot of which get downloaded again once the system is installed through updates, to my way of thinking it makes more sense to install from a cd then install any packages you want that don’t come with the cd using the software manager once the system’s up and working
That way you’re starting out with the latest versions of things and don’t end up with as much stuff that you aren’t likely to use, but again that’s my personal preference

So I am not sure anyone can know for sure what the problem might be since the online disks do work. However, even I have gotten a bad burn of a DVD. Also, it is possible to get a bad download, though making a bad disk is most common. DVD burners also work great till they stop working properly, often due to dust build up, at lest on desktops with fans running all of the time and sucking air in the front of the PC and dust with it. Bad media also happens ever so often. I suggest blowing out any dust from the CD/DVD drive, use a new DVD or CD media and reduce the burn speed down from the maximum and give it another try. If a second try does not work, its possible there is some hardware related reason the install fails.
Thank You,
You can verify the checksum of the iso before burning it. See the “Verify your download” section: software.opensuse.org: Download openSUSE 11.4
Or you can check the dvd at the beginning of installation. See first screenshot: SDB:DVD installation for 11.4 - openSUSE
Thanks. I was hoping to avoid a second download and burn, but if that is the best option it must be done. And I shall try to remember to adjust the burn speed.
I want to make this thread as solved, but cannot find place to do it.
