Whats better partition based install or LVM based install? Does one perform better than the other? I have a 640 gig drive. I have win 7 installed on a 360 gig partition.
The remaining space is free.
Rumor has it that LVM is more flexible and powerful. The problem you’ll have is that today, I think, most openSUSE enthusiasts (read: posters on these forums) use partition-based, so getting help will be more difficult if you run into issues with LVM.
On a home system partitions are MUCH easier to maintain and use
LVM’s have GREAT flexibility but on a home setup they ARE WAY MORE HASSLE than they are worth
On a production server LVM’s are better but not on a home system .

LVM is more flexible, but also more complex to setup and maintain. Look: I
have about 12 years linux experience, and I’ve never used LVM because I
don’t know how to repair it from the rescue disk if it breaks, and because
the questions about this of people having this problem in the mail lists
where not answered. I don’t know about here.
LVM is more flexible in which you can easily add space to partitions,
resize them. It is very interesting for professional use, systems with
several partitions, but not so much for a simple machine where you have
only root, swap, home, and perhaps boot partitions and a spare.
