I would like to install opensue to a external drive but not sure how to do it.
I have done that once just following the instructions of the regular installer on the DVD. But if you have windows installed on the hdd you might mess up the win boot loader. (As I did.) That can be restored but if people here shall help you you need to give more information:
What is your hardware setup?
Do you want to create a live system or a regular install? (Please note the latter will be dedicated to your system and maybe not easily run on other machines.)
Is there any / which other operating system is on your hdd?
There is a number of threads about dual boot systems you may search before starting.
Here you can download the appropriate installation media and search for documentation:
software.opensuse.org: Download openSUSE 12.3
Check the md5 sum after download to make sure the media is ok.
I can’t help you with dual boot. Not using that anymore since several years. But if you take some time for preparation and give appropriate information along with your questions people will help you here.
have a lot of fun.
kasi
I just did that a few days ago.
The installer wanted to put grub2 in the MBR of the main hard drive.
On the boot install page, I found a large button near the bottom of the screen, labeled “Boot Loader Installation Details”. That listed the various disks and their order. You could move-up or move-down in the order. I made sure that the external drive was the first. I think I deleted the others from the list, but I’m not sure of that.
After making that change, the installer now wanted to put grub2 in the MBR of the external drive. That looked right, so I continued with the install. It went well.
