Being a novice at Linux, (I have Opensuse 11.4), am slowly finding my way around the system and everything connected to same. Don’t delete or add anything until I have checked where possible that it is safe,or necessary, to do so.
My question is, that in the above, install etc. there are a number of items shown in red, i.e. under system, libstbasevido 0_10-0.
Does this mean that
a. It has not been installed and
b. Can I remove, or is it necessary to remove same.
Thanks for any help given
It could be that it is a redundant package
or
It could be a package that is a rollback (they show red) (updates are blue)
If it’s redundant you can tell by using the radio button like this

However, a package can look redundant (orphaned) if you have disabled the only repo that supplies it.
Complicated eh!
I like to add, that in case you do click to install and something goes wrong (perhaps KDE does not work anymore) you can still log in at the login screen by selecting IceWM as your DE.
I had once to do that in order to fix my messed up KDE. (the upgrade went somewhere but not 100%).
Normally i agree with the above post. If you don’t need to change or install a particular version, just leave it alone. Never mess with a running system
Complicated is not the word i would have used, but yes it is.
Can I thank the people that answered my question. Have taken on board all that was said, and yes I was going to leave well alone, is the saying “if its not broken, don’t fix it”, was just that I am finding the easiest way to learn Suse is to look into every file, directory etc. that I can find, and if I’m not sure, will either bypass and forget or come back to the forum.
Nice to have people out there who are prepared to share their knowledge.
This thread will now close.
Again my thanks
