install problems

I just installed opensuse 12.2 today and everything went fine… untill i updated the software… wen prompted to reboot i went into what i like to call a loop… it would restart tgo to where it says grub 2loading then reboot the machine… and continue doing that untill i manually shut it down… idk if this has happend to anyone… my goal is a tumbleweed install but i cant seem to get that far… any help would bw great… im using a net install iso could that be the problem?

Usually, some informative message is posted on the screen before shutdown/restart.
Something like… Soft error, CPU idle.
or… No boot device found.

Got a camera if you can’t extract the relevant text from the screen?

If you’re booting from a net install iso, what medium, eg USB, CD.
Maybe remove the install media before rebooting? or, more likely put it back in?
Maybe your BIOS device boot order is incorrect?

Do you get to a boot screen where you can choose options with your mouse or is it text only?

If you have enabled any tumbleweed repo then you have to ask in the
tumbleweed subforum.

Have you added any repository?

If this was me I would go for a KDE LiveCD (software.opensuse.org: Download openSUSE 12.2), which has a small download (its a CD, not a DVD), boot from the disk and give the install a try. As for going to Tumbleweed (https://forums.opensuse.org/content/55-how-upgrade-opensuse-12-x-tumbleweed.html), we have an article you must read on how to do that after you have a stable and running system.

Thank You,

I just installed opensuse 12.2 today and everything went fine.. untill i updated the software.

What repos did you add? how did you update? using YaST ? using zypper ? Any error messages when installing ?
You should have probably avoided Tumbleweed if you are not “Tumble certified”.
Please get “Tumble certified” by reading the following . openSUSE community should really come-up with a mock test and suggest whether the user is ready to Tumble  and probably present them with a “tumble badge” or something

wow… first off thanks for the fast responses… ill try to answer all questions… first off i am booting from usb… i do not have a cd burner and my laptop cd drive is not a dvd so i do all my installs via usb… second… there was no message error message before the reboot just said that a restart was needed soon… when i restarted it it went into the dell screen that gives bios or one time boot menu… from there it went into what i would believe was the begining of grub… where it says grub2 loading… but what ever the text it said was gone before i can look as the computer restarted at that point… and continued to do this… when updating i used yast… and i added nothing additional… i litterally installed the system (opensuse 12.2) and as soon as it booted i went to install updates… thats when everything went down hill… i have since reinstalled the system and now updating via zypper up command… im not sure if this will work… i have noticed some things that ive never seen from other distros… my hard drive is labeled as sdd 1 2 3 respectivly… rather then sda 1 2 3… idk if that is causing problems… ive worked with other systems before… i have run debian fedora ubuntu and most recently arch and archbang… but ive never had any problems with them… ive used so many as i havent really found one i like… so far i like opensuse but if i cant get it right i will be forced to go else were and i really dont wanna do that…

Tell use of your hardware.

Also it is confusing that you say that it loops at grub start but then you say you updated it which requires a running system. Both can not be true. Can you give more detail?

I think something went wrong during my install. Mine is still sda1…

okay i am running a dell latitude d410… completly stock 1.6 gig processor 1 gb ram intel onboard graphics onboard wifi and ethernet… all of which work fine… yes it did up date… as i said… i installed the system fine… rebooted after the initial installation and everything was fine… on first start up i went to update everything patches nd what not… as most new installs require them… after the updates were done(using yast) i was prompted that i need to restart soon because of the changes to the system… it was then that the loop went on… it shut down fine… then started up and became unboot able… went from the dell screen in the beginning that gives the option to go into the bios or one time boot menu… after that it went to a black screen then what appeared to be the innital grub load screen before u have the option to choose operations systems and restarted.; i never got a menu or anything… just the black screen that usually says grub loading

forgot to mention i have a 60gb hdd and i use a 500gb external for media (music, pics, movies ect)

yeahh im thinking that could be an issue… tho idk… is there a way to edit that info so it reads sda… again thats never done that before with anyother distros i have used…

downloading the live cd now incase i run into problems again…

Boot from the USB as if to install. Make sure you disconnect any external HD’s
Here is a video install guide: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/10573557/12.2_liveCD_Install/12.2_Install.m4v

When you get to the advanced partitioner. Your HD and USB install device will be seen
Are you saying then that the HD is not sda?

its sda now… but when it installed everything it was sdd… i changed the bootloader to probe sda instead of sdd… hopefully that changes thaqt

This what I do
At the Install summary: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/10573557/12.2_liveCD_Install/13_Install_Summary.jpeg
Click Booting
And do this: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/10573557/Grub2_Project/grub2-set.png

it seems fine now… restarted 3 time to check everything boots up just fine

thanks for the help everyone… now to try tumbleweed
