I’m tring to do a fresh install of openSuSE 12.1 x64 on my new PC and I encounter this problem during the install process :
error: can't create a transition lock on /var/lib/rpm/ .rpm lock (no such file or directory)
I’ve searched a little on Google and it seems that there are some issues reported regarding this problem (ex. [Bug 721676] New: openSUSE-12.1 beta1 installation fails with transition](http://195.135.221.135/opensuse-bugs/2011-10/msg00064.html) ), but I can’t find anywhere a statement that it is fixed.
So, is this issue currently fixed ? If so, please tell me or direct me to the fix.
Also, if anyone knows, can I install openSuSE’s GRUB on my 2TB HDD in MBR ?

the bug at https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=721676 is marked
resolved…but, if you read though that bug you find lots of
info…maybe it was fixed for most cases but not your…i guess if
you make sure your disk is the final release, and if it self tests ok
as caf said to do…then you may need to log the new bug…
Thanks for your help.
Ok. So I downloaded a fresh image of LiveCD KDE openSuSE 12.1 x64 and put it on a 16Gb USB stick with SuSE ImageWriter from Windows. Booted from USB and :
Check media -> OK
Boot into KDE -> OK
Install into HDD -> NOT OK !
When installing bootloader I get this error :
Chakra Linux installs itself without a problem, but the bootloader is not legacy GRUB, but a bootloader named BURG.
This is why I asked if openSuSE’s GRUB works well with my 2TB HDD (I read somewere - can’t remember where - that GRUB 1 has a limitation of 1.5 TB).
Can I install openSuSE with GRUB2 or any other bootloader ?
It seems that others have run into this problem.
I will switch to another distro until openSuSE decides that another bootloader integrated into the install process is not a bad idea.
Thanks for all your help, guys.

P.S. It’s kind of sad since I liked suse linux the most because it always was always able to configure itself well on installation and had drivers for all of my hardware (starting with my old 386 SX PC). Now it seems that cutting edge hardware is not so opensuse friendly (I’m referring to my 2TB HDD). Of course, Windows is to blame here, but I really expected opensuse to handle this
Of course, maybe if I knew enough I would be able to make it work … but this is all that I know
Sorry if I offended anyone, I really did not want/plan this … But I’m not pass the point where: I want to install an OS → something doesn’t work → ask for help on forum → try proposed fixes/solutions → still does not work. I need to work and I can’t work from Windows, so I tried opensuse that worked until 2 months ago on my 4year old laptop.

Telling us is no use. We are users like you. You have to tell “them”.
Hint: open a bugzilla stating that YaST will not configure grub2 and thus
you can not install to your 2 TB drive.

Well, I had that problem too…!! I intstalled open suse 12.1 on my external hard drive and it seems that if I want to get to the bootloader menu, I have to plug my external devices (both my hard disk and the usb stick I used on the installation) When I am about to boot from hard disk!!
It works like a charm!!

That’s not at all related to the problem stated on this thread several
months ago. The problem here is that you can not boot disks of 2 TB with
the grub yast installs.
Your problem is totally different, please start a new thread if you have a
problem.
