Install Problem - No Valid EXT4 File System

I’m new to Linux and I just trying installing OpenSuse 11.2 on a Dell Dimension 4500 2.0 Ghz with 512 mb memory and 40 gb hard drive.

During the installation the following error was produced: “System Check for partition /dev/sdb1 contains no valid Ext4 file system”. After the install process was completed, the keyboard and mouse were not useable. I’d appreicate a little help so that I can get my 1st Linux install of the ground. Thanks alot!!

You only mention one hard disk, what is your second disk sdb?

And welcome to openSUSE.

You might want to look at an install in progress.

Picasa Web Albums - caf4926 - openSUSE 11.2… (this might have more detail for you)

In the mean time tell us more. Do you have 2 HD’s because to us sdb says you do, but you didn’t specify it.
And are there other operating systems involved? Like Windows?

did you install from a Live CD or from the DVD?

did you do this http://tinyurl.com/25ydj4a before install attempt to
make sure you have a perfect install disk?

did you have any errors reported during the install?

512 MB of RAM is about half the recommended minimum, so if you are
evaluating openSUSE in comparison to something else, you might wanna
consider that…

The second hard drive is 20 gb

Could you elaborate on your problem.
As I read: You have a 40 and 20 GB HD. And you have installed SUSE and the keyboard and mouse were not working.

Now- did the mouse work during install?
Did the mouse stop working immediately post install or post online updates?

I tried defraging my hd as suggested in the doc and then re-installed openSUSE, following the openSUSE 11.2 slideshow that caf4926 posted and my system is up and running, which is a nice start. Thanks for all the help & suggestions!!
