Install Playonlinux

The following is the instructions for intallation. Could someone please tell me how to “run” this from the shell?

You just have to extract these files and run “./playonlinux”. PlayOnLinux is written in Python, so you have nothing to build, but Python must be installed first.

Far easier:

In YaST go to the software repositories configuration and add the Packman
community repository.

Then go to a terminal prompt and type:

sudo zypper in PlayOnLinux

That’ll install it from the Packman repo and automatically pull in the
necessary dependencies.

I cant find the url for the packman repository that will allow me to install version 4.1.1. Is there a packman repository that I can add that allows installation of the latest playonlinux version? A non " version specific" repo that always works with latest version. Im aware of the 1 click install that is version specific but it is 3.8.5 I think.

My goal is to install version 4.1.1. and I dont know if I can with the far easier way since I cant find a 4.1.1 package.

I found this:

zypper addrepo --repo http://packman.inode.at/suse/11.3/packman.repo

Since I use opensuse 11.3 is this the repository to add?

That would appear to be the 11.3 repo. Be aware, though, that 11.3 is
out of support - you should update to a more recent release.

You will doubtless run into more and more issues as 11.3 goes further out
of support - including an inability to resolve dependencies because of
conflicts in package versions.

You probably won’t be able to get the most recent PlayOnLinux to run as
it most likely requires a newer version of Python than was available on
11.3.

Found this for playonlinux 4.1.1:

Thank You for help I`m going to try to install it now. Also… packman currently has repositories for 11.3… Essentials and Multimedia… you are correct that the current version of python is not there but I do have python 2.6.5-3.5.1. which satisfies requirements.

I have tried to upgrade to 12.1. I couldnt immediately get wine to work so I went back to 11.3. I have a 2nd cpu to work with so maybe I`ll try again to resolve that and upgrade.

My further thoughts on upgrade are I have only a 40 gig cpu and I have a few game apps that are really all I need to use and they run fine on the wine versions available with Playonlinux 4.1.1.

A long as the old wine versions run the windows games then I cant see that I`ll have the ongoing need for newest python.

The playonlinux version 3.8.12 is the the only package that will install by the method you described. Back to my original question on how to “run” the file. Seems the hard way is the only way to install version 4.1.1.

You might try 11.4, as that’s still supported.

If the machine isn’t connected to the 'net, it’s less of a concern, but
you aren’t getting security updates, which means your system could be
compromised if you’re not careful.

If you’ve got a version of python that meets the needs of PlayOnLinux,
then it sounds like you’re golden, other than the caveat above.

chmod u+x <filename>

…/<filename>

Replace <filename> with the name of the file.

If that doesn’t work, then you probably should look at upgrading to 11.4.

Try the OpenSuse Games repro - Index of /repositories/games/openSUSE_12.1 (Substitute 12.2 for 12.1 if applicable). It has PlayOnLinux version 4.1.5-1.1, while Packman only has 3.8.12-4.2.
