Install OpenSUSE 12.1 with KDE 3.5

Hi,

the general documentation mentions that KDE 3 is included into the DVD. During the installation the options for KDE 3 were not offered.
When installing KDE 3 either through KDE3 - openSUSE or by adding the repositories and deselecting KDE4, KDE 3 desktop environment is still not coming up at boot time. The applications itself are installed on the system.

Has somebody performed the install of openSUSE 12.1 base system with KDE 3.5 yet?
If yes, can you provide the stepd you have performed?

thanks

From the page:

To choose kdm3 as the default session manager one needs to write "DISPLAYMANAGER=“kdm3” line to the file /etc/sysconfig/displaymanager (this can be done with the Yast module etc/sysconfig tool Editoras well).

Yes, I have tried both way’s but with no success.

I am using 12.1 and have kde 3.5 installed (as well as kde 4).

You need to install the range of kde 3.5 packages from:

Index of /repositories/KDE:/KDE3/openSUSE_12.1

Then when you start opensuse next kde 4 will start (assuming that you have auto log on). Just log out and you will be at the start screen (kdm), just select kde 3 and that will then start.

Most window managers load the same desktop as was used the last time. To run kde3 you have to choose it from the menu in the display manager. To exit your current desktop press Ctrl+Alt+Backspace and in the menu choose KDE3. Next time most display managers will load kde3 at boot.
