Install openSuse 11 on Vista and Kubuntu already installed

Right now I have Kubuntu 8.10 booting vista. I’d like to install Suse 11 and not lose what I have. I think it’ll end up with Suse booting the other two and that’s fine. I know my way around Grub to some extent so let’s use that as the loader. Where during install do I put the Suse boot loader? I think Kubuntus is in the MBR as I don’t remember putting it to a partition. Can I do this easy enough? Thanx for any help. :wink:

The installer should put Grub code in the Master Boot Record, pointing to the boot directory in the root partition of openSUSE, and the menu.lst there should incorporate Kubuntu and windows selections along with openSUSE.

OK swerdna, I did it and no problems 'cept for one. I checked all the repos and did an update. When I try to login to KDE 4.1 I get a:

“Could not start kdeinit4 Check your installation”

I click on OK and back to the login. I’m in icewm right now, not quite as pretty as kde. It booted fine after install, something in the updates changed that. The updates went normally although there was a bunch of them. I have the 11.0 retail dvd and that’s what I installed from hope it brings me to 11.1 Tnax

You need to add the repositories for KDE4.1. I don’t use KDE4, still using KDE3.5 until openSUSE 11.1 is released with KDE4.1 as standard. KDE4.0 is experimental – openSUSE 11.1 with KDE4.1 will be better. So you need to search the forum for the KDE4.1 repos to add – or some kind soul will append the information here. Good luck.

By the way you can have KDE3.5 and/or Gnome installed simultaneously alongside KDE4 and switch between them at the login prompt if you so desire.

All the info you need is here KDE/KDE4 - openSUSE. You’re looking for the " 11.0/KDE 4.1.x Desktop". Be sure to also add the Qt repository. Working fairly well (although still lacking software not yet ported from KDE 3).

If I put KDE 3.5 alongside 4.1 and log onto 4.1, will the software you speak about as “not yet ported” be available in my 4.1 by virtue of the concurrent presence of 3.5?

Yes (well, as long as you install it :wink: ). For example, I still am having trouble with k3b in 4.1, so I run the 3.5 version instead. I can’t guarantee 100% as I haven’t tested every app, but I’ve yet to have a problem with the mixed desktop.

@mingus725: Thanks

heres a better link for the kde 4.1 repos
and you add the 11.0 reops not the factory
